‘Zorro’ Reboot To Get ‘Dark Knight’-Like Origin Story; Chris Boal To Pen The Script

Hollywood’s obsession with giving audiences a dark and gritty origins story continues with Sony’s planned Zorro film. While many of those stories have focused on comic book heroes, Sony plans to give a new darker origins story to the swashbuckling Zorro. This has been planned for quite a while actually, with some of the stories falling through the cracks. But now the studio has hired Chris Boal (brother of The Hurt Locker‘s Mark Boal) to pen the script.

According to Deadline, Sony’s Zorro movie won’t be a traditional swashbuckler, but instead will go way of The Dark Knight:

…the ambition of the movie is less traditional swashbuckler, and more of a Dark Knight-style unveiling of the character with a new backstory, gritty realism and emotional core. There will be swordplay, combined with the martial arts that came from Europe and created a deadly combination of action and lethal fighting systems that combined swords, daggers, grappling and bare knuckles.

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, who are heading up Sony’s Men In Black reboot, will produce the Zorro movie.

The last time we saw Zorro on the big screen was when Antonio Banderas starred as the titular hero in both the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro and its 2005 sequel The Legend of Zorro. Zorro’s charm and sense of heroism has always provided stories of the lighter fare, but I’m not entirely sure how a dark and gritty reboot fits the character. I remember having a lot of fun watching him swish his sword in Disney’s black and white telling, and laughing and enjoying the movies thoroughly in the 1998 and 2005 films. So why kill that by giving it a dark reboot? We’ll have to see if this actually works.
