SXSW: ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Glut Of Villains Addressed By Marc Webb (Minor Spoilers)

Marc Webb

As promotional material, trailers, and posters began to emerge for Marc Webb’s upcoming sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which featured shots of main villain Electro along with Green Goblin, Rhino, and allusions to Vulture and Doc Ock, fans began to worry, and rightly so, that too many characters were being shoehorned in. Comparisons to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, which featured Sandman, Venom, and New Goblin, were immediately made and not in a good way.

This weekend at South By SouthWest (SXSW), Webb was at a Q&A where an attendee brought up the Spider-Man 3 comparison and the concerns of the movie being undone by having too many villains. Webb responded in kind, which you read below. This comes with some minor spoilers, so proceed with caution.

To the attendee’s question Webb noted:

We’re obviously familiar with the complaints people had. We’re very careful to make sure the stories intertwine. For Peter Parker, it’s very important that you create obstacles that are difficult to overcome.

This matches up closely with the opinion defenders of film’s choices have said previously, that while there may be multiple villains, they are all being united by a larger and common thread. The villains in this movie could be seen as extensions of a singular enemy – namely, as we’ve been lead to believe, Oscorp.

Additionally, Webb had this to say about the appearance of Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti, in the movie:

[Rhino is] in the movie for four minutes.

This is quite bold of Webb to announce, though perhaps in the interest of pre-release damage control, is for the best. It matches up with previous speculation that Rhino would serve as a minor villain that Spider-Man would dispatch in order to show the increasing challenges he’s facing as a superhero.

We’ll find out exactly how Rhino fits into the story and just how the multi-villain storylines will intertwine when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is released in theaters May 2, 2014.
