‘Jurassic Park’ Actor Confirmed For ‘Jurassic World’

Dr. Henry Wu (Right) In Jurassic Park

One of the first things that came to mind when hearing about the next Jurassic Park movie, titled Jurassic World, was whether or not any familiar actors/characters from previous installments would be finding themselves surrounded by genetically engineered dinosaurs once again. The answer to this question is yes, at least one familiar face will be returning…though probably not someone you’d expect.

In Michael Crichton’s original novel the character Dr. Henry Wu, the rock star geneticist brought in by John Hammond and tasked with bringing dinosaurs back to life, is an important one. In Steven Spielberg’s 1993 movie adaptation, his role was much, much smaller. Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow has confirmed that Wu, played by the same actor who played him in the ’93 movie, BD Wong, will be back.

You can read why Trevorrow is bringing back Wu and why you shouldn’t expect to see any of the big actors from previous movies below.

When asked which returning actors we could expect, if any, here was Trevorrow’s reply:

I know a lot of fans want to see the original characters back. They’re iconic. But I respect those actors too much to shoehorn them into this story for my own sentimental reasons. Jurassic Park isn’t about the bad luck of three people who keep getting thrown into the same situation. The only reason they’d go back to that island is if the screenwriters contrived a reason for them to go. But there is a character from the first film who makes sense in our world. This hasn’t been announced yet, but BD Wong will be returning as Dr. Henry Wu. He had a much larger role in the original novel, he was the engineer of this breakthrough in de-extinction. He spent two decades living in Hammond’s shadow, underappreciated. We think there’s more to his story.”

Opinions on this will vary, but I think it’s a good decision. The dinosaurs are the real stars of these movies, so there’s no point in trying to replicate past successes. Build an exciting new cast and make the theme park ride of a movie people are hoping for, and all will be well. Bringing back Wong is a nice nod to the original, and it should be interesting to see how the character plays into the movie.

You can read the entire chat with Trevorrow, including what his greatest challenge has been so far, how the movie will look, what we can expect from stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and how he plans to differentiate this movie from its predecessors, over at IGN.
