George R.R. Martin Talks Potential ‘Game Of Thrones’ Movies
  |  @   |

For many years there were attempts at adapting George R.R. Martin‘s “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series into a movie or movies. Thankfully for us TV jumped to cinematic levels on channels like HBO, who gave the books the adaptation they deserved with the hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones.

But might we still see a movie or two released based on Martin’s rich, complex world? The possibility is being “actively discussed,” according to Martin himself. Continue reading to see what he had to say.

After the season four premiere of the show in New York City recently, Martin talked to The Hollywood Reporter about potential movies based on his work, saying:

“It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

Another possibility is a movie based on the prequel novellas Martin has written, “Tales of Dunk and Egg,” a trio of stories which are set 90 years prior to the events of “A Song of Ice and Fire” and involve ancestors of the primary book series’ characters:

“They could be the basis for [a film]. I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more.”

The Dunk and Egg stories have also been mentioned as a potential prequel/spinoff series as part of Martin’s two-year deal with HBO, so many options exist.

I’m not personally familiar with the Dunk and Egg prequels, but Martin describes them as being lighter in tone and more adventurous, which sounds to me like something that could potentially work as a movie. The brutal primary Game of Thrones story we’re seeing play out on HBO right now, on the other hand…that’s not something I want to see transfer from the small screen to the big screen.

Movies are a different creature entirely, and the things they can do on HBO are not likely things that could be pulled off in even an R-rated movie. MAYBE a hard R. And even then, it’s very rare to see an R-rated movie with a $100 million budget or higher because studios are terrified of the risk. Perhaps the success of the show would be enough to move forward with it, and maybe it would all work out, but it feels like there’s too many variables in play. I as a fan am just hoping to see the entire story told, and would much rather see it continue on HBO the way it has been the past few years now. After we have that, all doors re-open.

Would you be interested in seeing a Game of Thrones movie or a Dunk and Egg prequel movie at some point, or are you happiest watching on HBO?
