‘Lego Movie’ Directors In Talks For ‘Ghostbusters 3’

Ghostbusters 3, the sequel no one really wants to happen, is being made whether we like it or not. But as we reported yesterday it won’t have its original director at the helm. With Ivan Reitman departing the big chair to take on a producer’s role on the long-gestating supernatural comedy rebootquel, the job of directing GB3 will doubtlessly be filled by a younger director. Or if the latest rumors are based in truth, it will get two directors.

According to industry insider Nikki Finke, the latest candidates to direct Ghostbusters 3 are none other than the unbeatable team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller. With a string of surprise live-action and animated blockbusters like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, and most recently The Lego Movie to their credit, these guys are two of the hottest filmmakers working today.

Finke first mentioned the possibility of them taking the job on her Twitter feed:

The sequel is said to be a quasi-reboot of the original with the first Ghostbusters serving in minor roles as mentors to a new team. Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Idiocracy) wrote the most recent draft of the script with the support of Reitman and studio Sony Pictures. Lord and Miller made both 21 Jump Street and its upcoming sequel 22 Jump Street for Sony, so obviously they’re keen to stay in business with these guys for as long as possible. It’s just that the directing team might not be so hot on helping to reboot a franchise that many agree should have been put to rest decades ago, especially with their careers on fire at the moment.

Plus, with Harold Ramis having recently passed away and Bill Murray refusing to return for even a modest supporting part, Ghostbusters 3 doesn’t exactly have the most irresistible lure for potential filmmakers. Yet, much like one the troublesome phantoms Venkman and the boys specialize in hunting down and trapping, this project refuses to die without a fight.

If Lord and Miller did sign on to direct Ghostbusters 3, it would give the project some much-needed respect and might just work. After all, they turned a popular children’s book into a beloved animated hit; turned a cheesy 1980s TV cop show into one of the funniest movies of the decade so far, and their big-screen CGI animated adaptation of a classic toy will wind up being one of the most popular and acclaimed features of 2014. If the finished film revived the franchise and made a boatload of cash for Sony, it would prove that the duo have the Midas touch and could write their own ticket in Hollywood until the end of time. Who knows?

Ghostbusters 3 is looking to begin filming in 2015. Lord and Miller’s 22 Jump Street hits theaters on June 13, 2014.
