The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Sweet Sixteen” Henchman 21 and “Elite Eight” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of March 26, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I hope you’re ready for another great week of comics because that’s what we’ve got in store for you. It’s that special week when Image drops all their books at once, Vertigo finally released that second issue of Sandman Overture, and Marvel keeps the new series coming. There are a lot of books coming out, is what I’m trying to say, and here are just a few to keep a look out for. So, get ready for some fun because it’s time to get your GoD List on!

Henchman 21

Skullkickers 25

Skullkickers #25 (Image Comics -$3.50) I nearly forgot to add this to the list this week and that would have been a shame because Skullkickers is back and I couldn’t be happier. Jim Zub has created one of the most enjoyable comics that I read, blending my love of role playing games with plenty of humor and fantastic art by Edwin Huang. Huang has a highly animated style, and the colors by Misty Coats bring the world to life. This is a bright, fun comic book about a human and dwarf living in your traditional fantasy world filled with elves and plants and extra-dimensional creatures and talking gorillas. In this new series, the dwarf is forced to return to his home and deal with the rest of the dwarfs that he probably had a good reason for leaving in the first place. This is just a fantastic comic and this issue is a great jumping on point if you’ve been thinking about picking it up for a while.

All-New Ghost Rider #1 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) There are two new series from Marvel this week that I am interested in (there are a few other ones launching this week as well, but I’m not all the interested in them). The main reason I am interested in these two series is because of the artists attached to them, one drawn one of my favorite new artists and the other drawn by one of my favorite veteran artists. First up is All-New Ghost Rider #1, written by Felipe Smith with art by Tradd Moore. Now, I’m not familiar with Smith’s work, and I’m not sure what to expect from the story of a new Ghost Rider taking on the mantle, forsaking the traditional motorcycle for a hellfire spewing muscle car. I mean, that does sound like it could be interesting and I’m going in with an open mind, but I’ll be honest and say that I’m much more interested in the work of Tradd Moore. I have loved his work on the first two Luther Strode mini-series for Image Comics and he is an artist who is ready to take the next step. Moore has a dynamic and over the top style that is super detailed. It’s a very unique style, particularly the way he stretches all his characters to put his stamp on them, and it’s a style I’ve come to enjoy. I’m a little sad that this series will take him away from working on the next Luther Strode series, but I’m excited to see him get introduced to a new audience. I’m also excited to see what colorist Val Staples will do with the series, with all the fire and other effects that will be going on throughout the story. There’s a lot going for this comic, I just hope it can get reignite love for Ghost Rider in a way that hasn’t happened for a while now.

Silver Surfer #1 (Marvel Comics $3.99) Next up we have another character that has had a number of series over the years but hasn’t caught on with readers in a big way. And it’s not like I’m the biggest Silver Surfer fan myself, but the artist on this book has turned this into a must-buy. Michael Allred brings his unique pop-art inspired style to the Surfer, and it seems like a match made in heaven. Allred is more than capable of giving the book a 60’s vibe that harkens back to the characters origin, and he’s also able to get the Surfer’s emotions across the page to readers, with his simple but expressive linework. The writer on this new series also has me a bit more at ease than I am with Ghost Rider, since Dan Slott is more of a known quantity to me. I know what I am getting with Slott, and more often than not, what I get is a well written comic with a good blend of action and humor. I was sad when Allred’s previous book FF was cancelled just as it was hitting its stride, but I’m glad that Marvel has found another book for him.

American Vampire Volume 6 (DC/Vertigo Comics – Hardcover $22.99; Kindle $9.99) Not sure why this didn’t come out last week to coincide with the launch of American Vampire: Second Cycle, but hey, I don’t schedule these things. Now you can get caught up to date on Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque’s vampire epic and then jump into the new series.

Chew Volume 8 (Image Comics – $12.99) I’m bringing this to your attention if you are a trade waiter for Chew because hooray, you have a new trade to buy! If you buy it in issues, or buy it in trade, or buy it in hardcover, you need to be buying Chew in one manner or another.

A+X #18 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) I’m not actually going to buy this, I just want to bring this issue to your attention, because in A+X #18, The Vision and Kitty Pryde team up to phase through stuff. Why has no one teamed these two up before?!?!

The Sandman: Overture #2 cover art by JH Williams

The Sandman: Overture #2 (Vertigo Comics – $3.99) DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNN it’s been a long time since The Sandman: Overture #1 – five friggin’ months! That’s a real long time to wait. So long in fact I’ve actually pretty much forgotten most of what that first issue was about, but I know I loved the hell out of it and I wouldn’t mind re-reading it, which I will. Then, it’s on to The Sandman: Overture #2, written by Neil Gaiman with art by J. H. Williams III. Overture is a prequel to the original Sandman series which will tell us the origins of Morpheus, aka Dream. In this second issue, Morpheus will supposedly find out why he was summoned and what he’s being called upon to do. Note – if you want a digital copy of issue 2, you can get it for Kindle; also, there’s a combo pack, which allows you to get both the print and digital versions. There will be a Sandman: Overture #2 – Special Edition coming out on May 28, 2014.

Tomb Raider #2 (Dark Horse – $3.50) Writer Gail Simone gives us an all-new original story for young Lara Croft, the action-adventurer shown in this new Tomb Raider comic book series after her very first real adventure. The comic book series picks up where the video game Tomb Raider, a reboot of the Tomb Raider universe, left off. If you didn’t jump on to this series already, grab Tomb Raider #1 and catch up for this second issue.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #3 (Dark Horse – $3.50) The continuation of the Firefly ‘verse continues with this third installment of the new comic book series, written by Zack Whedon and executive-produced by creator Joss Whedon. Check out our review of Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #3.
