Kickstarter Spotlight: Schmuck

Everyone has had awkward moments in life, right? Some people are afraid of public speaking, others are troubled by social interactions. I’ve even met a person who can’t seem to make eye contact, no matter what. But probably the most common issue out there is dating. That’s what SCHMUCK is all about — it’s one guy’s quest to find his perfect (or near-perfect) match. Set in New York City, it’s a semi-autobiographical compilation of comics telling the story of Adam Kessler (based on the life of writer Seth Kushner) as he tries dating in the big city. Containing tales that range from the hilarious to the heartbreaking, this anthology tells Adam’s (or is that Seth’s?) story in a way in which we can all relate. Sounds cool, huh? And since this is a Kickstarter, you can even help get this bad boy published!

As with all crowdfunding prospects, this is all about getting the general public involved. And as we all know, everyone likes to be rewarded. With that in mind, SCHMUCK really wants to reward you for helping! For a mere five bucks, you get a digital version of the graphic novel. If the printed word is more your style, then just make it twenty-five dollars and you get an exclusive signed edition! Not only that, but your name is actually in the book at that reward level! Add on a few more smackers and you can get the digital and printed versions along with one of several different prints to hang on your wall! This is just a taste of what’s available. Seriously, they load you down with goodies, compounding as you pledge more!

But maybe you are less about the rewards and more about showing love to an indie book. Well, if so, you’ll be pleased with the cast that is putting this all together. Of course, Kushner is the writer behind it all but he’s enlisted Eric Skillman as designer, Jonathon Ames for the Forward, and twenty-two superb cartoonists. As a matter of fact, here’s what the Kickstarter page has to say about those artists:

SCHMUCK is an anthology series and features the work of a host of talented artists, who illustrated short schmucky stories, which together tell a complete narrative, including; JOSH NEUFELD (A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge), NICK BERTOZZI (The Salon), DEAN HASPIEL (The Fox), KEVIN COLDEN (The Crow), GREGORY BENTON (B+F), LELAND PURVIS (Resistance), SEAN PRYOR (Pekar Project), BOBBY TIMONY (Night Owls), NOAH VAN SCIVER (The Hypo), OMAR ANGULO (Hurricane Wilma), SHAMUS BEYALE (The Grimm Fairy Tales), RYAN ALEXANDER-TANNER (To Teach), NATHAN SCHREIBER (Power-Out), STEPHAN DESTEFANO (Lucky in Love), GEORGE JURARD (Beacon Lights), GEORGE SCHALL (Dark Horse Presents), TONY SALMONS (Vigilante), JAMES SMITH (Gang of Fools), SKUDS MCKINLEY (Rumble Moon), JONATHAN ALLEN (Vacationland), PIERCE HARGAN, CHRISTA CASSANO (Breakers) and cover art by JOSEPH REMANT (Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland) and book design by Eisner Award winning designer ERIC SKILLMAN (Tales of Sand) and forward by JONATHAN AMES (HBO’s Bored To Death, The Alcoholic).

So as you can see, there is a lot going on with this campaign. I encourage you to visit the official Kickstarter page here and give some serious consideration to helping finance this worthy endeavor. I know I did! Be sure to visit the campaign page soon, it ends on April 16! Check out the video below and, as always, thanks for reading!
