DC/Vertigo Comics’ ‘Scalped’ TV Series Coming To WGN America
  |  @   |

It was revealed today that WGN America has decided to develop a TV series based on the DC/Vertigo Comics series Scalped. The comics series, created by writer Jason Aaron with art by RM Guera, revolves around the life of Dashiell Bad Horse, a cop who goes back to the reservation he grew up on so he can go undercover to bring down the corrupt leader of the tribal council Lincoln Red Crow.

Scalped will not be the first original series for WGN America, which will launch its first series, Salem, on April 20th 2014. It will also join a heavy slate of DC Comics properties in development, joining the previously announced Gotham, The Flash, Constantine, Hourman, Preacher, and iZombie.

The show is being developed by Doug Jung, who will write the pilot as well as working as the executive producer on the show. Jung most recent work has been on the Cinemax series, Banshee.

In terms of other shows that are being developed for TV, Scapled may be the most natural fit. The series is full of rich characters and has a plot that can run for a number of years with plenty of twists. Scalped has a bit in common with Breaking Bad, and since there aren’t any supernatural elements in it, it can probably be produced for less money that other comics based series. I’m certainly more interested in seeing a TV series based on this than I am in the seeing the Preacher show.

The only concern will be how far WGN America is willing to go in terms of content, as there is plenty of adult material in the series. We will also have to wait and see how committed to original programing WGN America is, as they are just starting to dip their toes into those waters.

What say you, gentle readers? If you’ve read Scalped before, are you interested in watching a show based on it? Let us know what you think.

  2. YES YES and with Doug Jung who worked on Banshee this sounds promising as I saw Banshee as the closest analogue to Scalped.
    Fingers crossed.
