‘Jurassic World’ Director Colin Trevorrow Talks Sequels, Animatronic Dinosaurs, Characters
  |  @   |

Universal’s Jurassic World is already in production, with Colin Trevorrow sitting in the director’s chair. Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Johnson, Ty Simpkins, Omar Sy, and more all star in the film that could, possibly, be the beginning of a new franchise. The film, although considered a reboot, will stay within the continuity of the Jurassic Park film franchise established by Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World) and Joe Johnson (Jurassic Park III).

Now Trevorrow is talking about the reboot, sequels, some of the characters, and the animatronic dinosaurs that will be used in the film. Hit the jump to read what he had to say.

Talking to Empire, Trevorrow elaborated on possible sequels that we might see if Jurassic World is a hit. Remember, a film of this magnitude is never a one-off.

“We definitely talked about [sequels] a lot. We wanted to create something that would be a little bit less arbitrary and episodic, and something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story.”

It seems that Universal is taking a page from Marvel’s playbook by creating a series. Lost World and Jurassic Park III did feel more arbitrary and episodic than something cohesive as Trevorrow has stated. And even if the film does copy Marvel’s business plan, it will be a little bit more refreshing to see a continued storyline that doesn’t involve superheroes.

It is said that the film takes place 22 years after Jurassic Park. That is the only bit of information we have to go on. However Trevorrow did confirm to Empire that the dinosaurs would be animatronic, not CGI (at least not fully; surely plenty of digital effects will be used as well). He also spoke about the co-existence of human and dinosaur:

“It’s about alpha dominance and the fact that humans have been the alpha species for a very long time. And so now we’ve brought back another that happened to be the alpha species during its time, and we have to co-exist, so what is that relationship?”

That seems to point out an interesting conflict that wasn’t as explored in the previous films.

Now as for some of the other characters in the film, the director talked about Sy’s character, who he is revealed to be a best friend of Pratt’s character.

“He’s essentially Chris Pratt’s best friend,” he said of the Sy character. “They work together and have some pretty cool action scenes together. I wanted to create a relationship there that could be memorable and potentially carry on to future films.”

Jurassic World opens June 12, 2015.
