Deleted ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Post-Credits Scene Reveals Possible Villain Resurrection

The mega-budget web-slingin’ sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was crammed from one end of the 35mm film frame to the other with reimagined villains like Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti). Sony Pictures Entertainment has made crystal clear its intentions to expand their rights to Spider-Man and the various characters in his universe into a cornucopia of spin-offs, including films based on the villains Venom and the Sinister Six.

The studio and director Marc Webb embedded clues in Amazing Spider-Man 2 hinting at the future of the main franchise and its possible side-quels, but the comic book blockbuster’s end credits sequence was originally supposed to include a scene implying that yet another of Spidey’s adversaries could make a return to terrorize the superhero and the people of New York.

Cut before the film’s release and replaced in certain markets by a short preview from the unconnected X-Men: Days of Future Past, the scene originally intended to run following the end credits would have hinted at the possible resurrection of Oscorp’s founder Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper), who died as a result of a ravaging disease for which he devoted his final years to finding a cure. The scene took place deep within Oscorp and showed Osborn’s severed head being kept in cryogenic freeze. Then, according to Geek Tyrant….

The scene is described as showing the shadow man from the film walking up to Norman’s cryogenically frozen head in a chamber and saying, “Wake up old friend.”

You can check out still photos from the deleted scene here below.

The “man in the shadows” who was omnipresent throughout the 2012 reboot and its recently released sequel is Osborn’s devious associate Gustav Fiers (played in both films by Michael Massee), also known as “the Gentleman”. This scene would have set Osborn up to oppose Spider-Man in one of the hundreds of future installments that already have release dates staked out by Sony, but its deletion from the sequel leaves those plans in question. Most likely it could return later this year as a Blu-ray bonus feature.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is now in theaters. You can check out our own FamousMonster’s review here.
