Drunken Game Review: Schmovie

Schmovie

Getting trashed and playing board games with other 20- and 30-something-year-olds is my favorite part of adulthood. It’s really difficult to have a bad game night when friends, fun, and alcohol are involved – but it can happen. Luckily for me, I just played Schmovie, and with a game like that, there’s no chance for a bad night.

This is a pun-tastic romp focusing on creating movie titles from two random cards and a genre. Anything from like a romantic comedy about a two-timing ninja. Or a horror movie about a renegade Easter Bunny. The possibilities are only limited by how clever you are.

Schmovie

Drinkability: Schmovie gets an 8/10 for the ability to consume adult beverages during this game. You’re gonna want to craft your own drinking rules, but I’d suggest making anyone who says “see what I did there?” drink at least 5. There’s gonna be a lot of that saying seeing as how a large portion of the game is based on puns.

Fun: Well, it depends on who you play with. Luckily my friends are generally the creative or alcoholic type – or a hybrid of the two. It comes down to how creative you can get. The game allows you to push the limits. I mean, I’m a guy who made his Apples To Apples cards basically X-rated before Cards Against Humanity came along, so offensiveness isn’t a word I even consider. You can really make some funny shit in this game, but it all comes down to who you play with. That said, Schmovie rocked with another 8/10. Points deducted only because I’m not as clever as I thought I was.

Overall Experience: Schmovie is a blast. You have to be witty – but it’s also fairly competitive because you wanna be more witty than your jerk-off friends or loved ones. That said, it gets another 8/10 on the Rick-tor scale (see what I did there?). The creators put a lot of thought into this game. It’s quirky and totally out there, and it’s perfect for a game night.

Suggested Beverages: Scotchetty scotch scotch or something on the hard side. While a lot of beer wouldn’t be frowned upon, it isn’t that type of pony show. Schmovie, like Scattergories, is more the slow “think & drink” type of ride rather than the “drink till you’re fucked” type of show. It also depends on if you make drinking rules. I mean, let’s get down to brass tacks, that really dictates what you should drink.

Do I Need To Be Drunk?: Shit no. But you clicked on an article entitled “Drunken Game Review” so you’re at least curious. The game is great with or without grandpa’s old cough medicine, but if you did want to drink and play it, you totally could and it would own.

Random Note: My cat loved the box. Like, fucking adored it. It has the Mr. Bubbington seal of approval – which is not handed out willy-nilly.

Schmovie Cat

Overall, I give Schmovie an 8 out of 10, only because I learned that I kind of suck at puns and coming up with witty titles based on random ideas. If you’re the pun-type, it’s a solid 10. But it’s such a kick in the pants that even if your puns are as lame as the rest of your humor, it’s still pretty terrific. Thanks, Schmovie!
