Confirmed: Channing Tatum Will Play Gambit
  |  @   |

After months of rumors and speculation, and much fan debate, Channing Tatum is confirmed to play Gambit from the X-Men universe. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner actually reached out to Tatum after he commented that he would like to play as the Ragin’ Cajun in an interview back in September. According to the actor, if he did get the role, he would be using a real cajun accent.

So where does Gambit fit in the whole X-Men franchise now that the film’s chronology will likely change dramatically due to the events in X-Men: Days Of Future Past? What does Shuler Donner have to say about this? Hit the jump to learn more.

While doing the press tour for X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Shuler Donner spoke to Total Film about the future of the X-Men film franchise, and confirmed that Tatum will indeed play Gambit.

“It is Channing, yes, yes. He’s a rogue, he’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. He can handle the action, as we know, and he’s got a real good heart, I know him personally. He’ll be great for Gambit, and he’s a southerner too, he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”

While the producer has said she wants to do a standalone Gambit film, there’s no word yet the character will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse. Given that Tatum is an A-list star, if he does make it into Apocalypse, he would likely have to share the limelight with Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and assuming she is signed on for another sequel, Jennifer Lawrence. So it should be interesting to see how significant of a role Gambit plays in Apocalypse, if at all.

And yes, we have seen Gambit before in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Taylor Kitsch was pretty much the only good thing about the film, even with the very limited amount of screen time. And the fact that we are seeing William Stryker – a much younger version played by Josh Helman – again, could mean that the events in Future Past will likely wipe away most of the events in X-Men Origins, thus setting up the stage for X-Men: Apocalypse. But it would be interesting to know if the producers did actually reach out to Kitsch to see if he would entertain the idea of coming back to the X-Men film franchise is some sort of capacity.
