Roland Emmerich To Direct New ‘Stargate’ For MGM, Warner Brothers

Stargate

The Stargate franchise is ready for a return to the big screen with the announcement of a new re-imagining that’s being planned as a trilogy.

MGM and Warner Brothers have reached a deal with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin for the reboot, with Emmerich directing and Devlin producing. The duo was also behind the 1994 original Stargate, which starred Kurt Russell and James Spader, in the same roles.

In a joint statement, Emmerich and Devlin said of the news:

“The “˜Stargate’ universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home,”

Emmerich is very busy right now, currently shooting a movie titled Stonewall while also in pre-production on the planned two-part Independence Day sequel, ID Forever, which will be filmed back-to-back. It’s assumed that Stargate will come after those projects are all wrapped up, so it’s likely still off in the distance a bit.

  1. Really happy to hear it’s back. Watched them all…. Curious to know if will be a new story or a spin off from the originals…

It seems kind of like it will be a reboot unfortunately.

  3. We don’t need a reboot – how about finishing Universe instead of leaving it on a cliffhanger.
All we heard was some bollocks of it not being popular – it was the most watched show ONLINE of all time, beating Lost and many others.
Partner up with netflix or amazon instant video and roll in cash & views and continue the DAMN series, not make a reboot of what we’ve already seen!!!

  7. You obviously don’t understand “re-imaging.” They are going to screw us and start over instead of continuing with the existing Stargate universe.

  8. Absolutely agree!! I want to see a continuation of the TV Stargate, especially SGU, rather than an Emmerich blockbuster.

  9. Agreed and maybe finish the game too!

  10. Years of Stargate retconned because he they don’t care. They see all of us trying to save SGU to this day and think any ol’ Stargate will do.

  11. Oh my gosh I don’t care what they do as long as we get some more stargate… we’ll good stargate that is. I can’t believe there aren’t any good writers available anymore… Just as long as they are fans of all stargate series and understand why they were a success than whatever they do should be a success.

  16. Reboot – a newspeak for not developing, for no innovation.

    Comment by Wolf Duttlinger — May 31, 2014 @ 7:01 am

  17. Please, no re-boot OR re-imagining. While I do enjoy Stargate (I HAVE seen the entire franchise, so I’m not just saying that), it has basically wrapped itself up. The Goa’uld were finally eliminated, the Ori were eliminated, twice (counting Adria). The Wraith were pressed sufficiently into submission. The Azgard committed mass suicide. The franchise is done; put a fork in it and pull it out of the oven. I’d prefer to see writers make a NEW series in a NEW universe that goes in the direction we saw in SG-1’s first few seasons – back when creative plot was valued and episodes weren’t as serial. Pulling ideas from Star Trek: Enterprise wouldn’t hurt.

Also, please don’t hide behind a veil of political correctness. If nobody is whining or upset, you’ve done something wrong. Dare to imagine that which has not been imagined yet. Recall Isaac Asimov’s words: “Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today – but the core of science fiction, its essence has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all.”
