A Metal Gear Solid movie has been in what seems to be a perpetual gestation with no solid news on production in sight. The complex history of the game makes it nearly impossible to envision as a film, but Sony hasn’t given up, and has now taken the first step to making the adaptation.
Kings of Summer director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is in talks to direct a movie based on the hit video game franchise that has lasted nearly three decades. Hit the jump for more info.
Deadline was the first to report on the news. Avi Arad will produce, while production president Michael De Luca will oversee the project. The Metal Gear Solid film has been consistently delayed due to the fact that the studio and game creators spent so much time on finding a way to portray the game’s main character Solid Snake.
First released back in 1987, the Metal Gear series follows Solid Snake, a soldier of the special operations force Foxhound. What separated this game from other shooters was that players were required to maneuver using stealth and limited amount of kills. But the franchise didn’t take off until the Metal Gear Solid series was launched on the Playstation platform. Since then the Metal Gear Solid series has seen two sequels, a couple of spinoffs, and two prequels – one of which has been split into two parts.
Although the thought of a Metal Gear Solid movie sounds intriguing, history tells us that video game to movie adaptations have not fared well with audiences, particularly fans of the game. What is interesting about that is the Metal Gear Solid games are quite a cinematic experience themselves. Hideo Kojima, the game’s creator, has almost always featured lengthy dialogue scenes in between actual game play, but it is to enhance the experience of the franchise as a whole. How the reverse will be done should be interesting given how dense the game’s history actually is, and because of that, producers and screenwriters could pull a number of characters of different installments of the game and interject them into the film.
Here’s a brief synopsis of the game:
A genetically enhanced, renegade special forces unit, FOXHOUND, leads an armed uprising on a remote island in Alaska’s Fox Archipelago. This island, codenamed “Shadow Moses”, is the site of a nuclear weapons disposal facility. The forces that seized this island, led by a mercenary known as Liquid Snake, have acquired the nuclear-capable mecha, Metal Gear REX, and are threatening the U.S government with a nuclear reprisal if they do not receive the remains of the “legendary mercenary” Big Boss within 24 hours.
But the main reason why the franchise’s history is so complex is because each game brings out new truths, lies, conspiracy, characters, betrayals, and more. In addition, the game’s protagonist, Solid Snake, has quite an interesting family tree that’s full of clones, spliced DNA, and mind control. And all of this takes place in a course of a number of games. So as you can imagine, trying to create a film based on those games will be quite a task, and if Sony is really going to make this happen, they might as well just follow through with creating a universe for the game.
