Disney Store Responds To ‘Star Wars’ Fan Petition #WeWantLeia
  |  @   |

Now that Disney owns LucasFilm and its Star Wars franchise, fans assumed that the mega corporation so keen on merchandising would induct Princess Leia into their pantheon of princesses and let the merch flow. But nope. In response to a fan inquiry on Twitter last month, the Disney Store said there that “are no plans for Leia products at Disney Store.”

This didn’t sit well with fans, many of whom feel the franchise focuses more on Jedi toys for boys, as opposed to anything geared towards girls. The backlash came in the form of the hashtag #WeWantLeia accompanying a petition launched by fans. Enough noise was made that now Disney has switched gears and says they will have items that feature Leia, according to TIME.

“The current assortment of Star Wars products at the Disney Store launched earlier this year, and is just the beginning of what is to come,” Disney spokeswoman Margita Thompson told TIME. “We’re excited to be rolling out new products in the coming months, including several items that will feature Princess Leia, one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars galaxy.”

Can I just say – how genius is it that Disney now has people DEMANDING merchandise from them? They didn’t have to do anything except not do anything, and that was enough to get the public to be like, take my money!!! I love Disney, but they are real lucky.

By the way, back when I was little, I had a Princess Leia fashion doll that came complete with her Star Wars: A New Hope white dress and hair buns. I had taken the buns out to try some of the other suggested hair styles from the accompanying booklet, naively thinking I could easily restore the factory-assembled hair style. Yeah, no. I NEVER COULD. It’s one of my great regrets in life. So, I guess you can could count me in as one of the people ready to throw my money at Disney, because I want a new Leia doll!!!

  1. Growing up the Disney princesses didn’t do it for me. They were too girly and as I would have phrased it at the time “into dumb mushy stuff.” Leia on the other hand, was cool. She was a princess in name only. She rocked! I’m so glad Disney is listening to their fans.
