‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’ Release May Be Pushed To 2017
  |  @   |

If you are still bitter about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, no one would really blame you, especially on account that the film got mixed to negative reviews, and is one of the lowest earnings Spider-Man films of the five that have been released. Though the $60 million weekend opening – it took almost a month and a half to reach over $200 domestically – and a $600 million worldwide gross isn’t a complete loss, the fact that the grossing numbers have been dwindling since the reboot isn’t exactly what Sony was hoping to see.

With Sinister Six and Venom spinoff films coming in the near future, all of which are interconnected to The Amazing Spider-Man canon, Sony is left to rethink their strategy for the franchise, which may actually include pushing The Amazing Spider-Man 3‘s release from 2016 to 2017. Hit the jump for more.

AICN’s Jeremy Smith was the first to report on the news:

I have been told that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 has been moved to an undetermined date in 2017.

Sony had planned for four Amazing Spider-Man films to be released, with subsequent spin-offs to be released in between. Overall, Sony hopes to release at least one Spider-Man film a year. Marc Webb is signed on to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3, with a script written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman turned in. But with such disappointing reviews and box office returns, it isn’t a huge surprise that Sony may actually be thinking about pushing out the next film’s release date.

With the idea that Sony may actually be considering to reschedule the film to a later date, there is a possibility that the studio may actually try to push one of the spinoff films to an earlier slot. Drew Goddard certainly has the time to work on Venom since he is no longer the showrunner on the Netflix Daredevil series. Kurtzman will direct the Sinister Six film.

A spin-off film may just be the thing the studio needs to breathe new life into the reboot. The franchise isn’t a huge loss, but it also isn’t as profitable as Sony would have hoped it would be. So giving audiences a change of pace while staying within the contained universe may change their views on the franchise.
