Turning comics and graphic novels into feature films is nothing new. And doing it without a big budget supplied by a major studio is almost impossible. However, the key word there is almost.
The Kickstarter campaign for The Chair is all about having a stellar cast take this disturbing graphic novel and adapting it into a film that still captures the horror and darkness of the original work. With a modest budget for the film and a streamlined concept of where the money is going, the only part left is you, the donor. So read on to see what you can do to make this psychological thriller come to life!
Based on Peter Simeti‘s original graphic novel The Chair, this insider’s view of an innocent man on death row is less about redemption and more about survival. But what is a man willing to sacrifice to survive? His morals? His dignity? Or perhaps even his sanity? The main character, Sullivan, watches as his fellow inmates are tortured and killed without remorse. Concluding that his only chance is to fight back, he takes his fate into his own hands by becoming something he claimed he was not. Not everything is black and white and we all have a few skeletons in our closet…but what does Sullivan have in his? Is he really as innocent as he claims? Or does he, too, have a dark side that even he doesn’t comprehend? When push comes to shove, the human mind can justify almost anything if the endgame is survival.
Director Chad Ferrin has assembled a spectacular cast, especially considering the small budget with which he is working. Eric Roberts, Bill Oberst Jr., Brian Thompson, and Susan Eisenberg just to name a few. The crew is also chock full of greatness. Jill Maxcy, Tim Eckel, and Paul Lacovara are all in on this, too.
The rewards that are available at different donation levels are as varied as they are plentiful. Five bucks gets you a thank you and a signed postcard. Seven gets you the first reward and a sticker set. jump up to the twenty-four dollar mark and you get digital copies of the film, the graphic novel, and the soundtrack! Or if the soundtrack isn’t the thing for you then add a dollar more and get a Blu-ray or DVD copy, too! The rewards really start picking up at the hundred-dollar mark, with posters signed by the cast and crew plus a ton of other gifts like the film on disc and your name in the credits on screen! There are props to be had, walk on roles available, and all sorts of stuff that you cannot imagine.
I truly hope you take the time to check out this campaign. A whole bunch of folks have pulled together to get the ball rolling but it takes a village to raise a child, er…make a movie. So dig deep if you can and make a donation. The official Kickstarter page has a tremendous amount of information and really does a great job of explaining what this project entails, and make sure you watch the video below; it’s loaded with information, as well. This Kickstarter concludes on June 28, 2014 so make sure you tell your friends about it!
