The GoD List: Comics For July 2, 2014
  |  @   |

Each and every week, I, “Oh, Canada!” Henchman 21 and “USA!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 2, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

A happy belated Canada Day to all my friends north of the border and a happy early Independence Day to all my friends in the U.S. Hope you all get to enjoy a nice three-day weekend, unless you have to work, which I can’t really help you with. What I can help you with is comics, specifically what comics to buy this week. So celebrate your freedom by supporting capitalism in all its glory and buying some comics. It’s what Cap and Supes and especially the U.S. Agent want you to do. And if you want to make them sad this week that’s fine, all you have to do is ignore the advice of The GoD List!

Wonton Soup: Big Bowl Edition (Oni Press – $19.99) To be honest, I don’t know a ton about Wonton Soup: Big Bowl Edition, but I do know one thing; it was written and drawn by James Stokoe. If you don’t know who James Stokoe is, he is an amazing artist with a Geof Darrow/Moebius-inspired hyper-detailed art style. In addition to this series, you should also check out his series Orc Stain, as well as his Godzilla mini-series from last year, Half Century War. Getting to this book, I know that this new edition collects some of Stokoe’s earlier work from a time before he was on my radar, so I’m excited to see this work that is new to me. According to the info from Oni Press, Wonton Soup is about “Johnny Boyo and Deacon as they cruise the intergalactic superhighways in search of legendary ingredients and amazing adventure.” So not only does this feature work by one of my favorite artists, but it also is a cooking comic, which is one of my favorite sub-genres of comics. I’m sure this is going to be a very weird book, but it sounds like good fun, and if you’ve never read anything by Stokoe before, you should definitely check Wonton Soup out.

East of West #13 (Image Comics – $3.50) Have I told you how good East of West is? Because it’s really good. The mix of western and sci-fi that writer Jonathan Hickman has created is always exciting, and I love the world he has created here. It falls on artist Nick Dragotta and colorist Frank Martin to bring that world to life, and they have been more than up to the challenge so far. There are a lot of different characters and locations for Dragotta to show off his chops, and I look forward to each new issue just to see what the creative team comes up with. East of West may not be the easiest book to jump into, but it continues to be a fascinating bit of science fiction.

Atomic Robo and the Knights of the Golden Circle #2 (of 5) (Red 5 Comics – $3.50) Hey, it’s a new issue of Atomic Robo, the comic that should be on everyone’s must-buy list! There’s robots, there’s cowboys. What’s not to love?

Captain America #22 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) Happy Fourth of July!! Buy some Cap comics. There’s a good chance they’re on sale.

Big Trouble in Little China #2 (BOOM! Studios – $3.99) Here’s to the Army and Navy, and the battles they have won. Here’s to America’s colors, the colors that never run. May the wings of freedom never lose a feather.

Superman Unchained #7 (DC Comics – $3.99) Because I feel like giving equal time to DC and because Superman may be even more patriotic than Captain America.

Rocket Raccoon #1 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) There are three new Guardians of the Galaxy-related issues out this week, which seems a bit like overkill to me. It’s almost like Marvel has a movie coming out featuring the characters. Out of the three books coming out this week (the other two being The Legendary Star-Lord and Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxies Most Wanted), the only one I’m slightly interested in is Rocket Raccoon #1, and that’s largely on the strength of Skottie Young’s art. Young has just finished an extended run adapting the first four Oz books into comic form, and now he brings his singular style to one of the goofiest comic characters ever created, while also writing an ongoing series for the first time. Young’s energetic, animated style is the perfect fit for Rocket Raccoon and should make for a fun and comedic series that highlights the inherent silliness of the character, while not making the whole thing a joke. It’ll be interesting to see how Young walks that line, and also how he grows as a writer. One thing is for sure, this will be a beautiful issue to look at.

RoboCop vs. the Terminator HC (Dark Horse Comics – $24.99) Once again, my buddy Henchman has selected a bunch of comics that I have my eye on, like Big Trouble in Little China #2 (no-brainer!) and Rocket Raccoon #1 (c’mon, a talking badass raccoon!), but thankfully, he left me this oldie but goodie – RoboCop vs. the Terminator. This newly restored hardcover edition, which a new cover by Simonson, collects all of the 4-issue 1992 miniseries from writer Frank Miller and artist Walter Simonson – now THAT’S a pairing right there, as is, of course, RoboCop and The Terminator!!!!!

Comics’ greatest creators pit the supreme machine killer against the ultimate cybernetic cop in one of the most celebrated crossovers ever! When fate reveals that the technology that built RoboCop will lead to the creation of Skynet, Alex Murphy must engage in time-twisting battle against both the murderous computer network and the human resistance fighters out to destroy him!
