The GoD List: Comics For July 16, 2014
  |  @   |

Each and every week, I, “Lady Captain America!” Henchman 21 and “Just a Lady!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 16, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Here’s your intro. There are comics out this week. A lot of them. A lot of them are great. We’re here to tell you what to check out this week. It’s what we’re all about. It’s The GoD List!

Henchman 21

Seconds (Ballantine Books – $25.00) Would you believe me if I told you that it’s been almost exactly 4 years since the final volume of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim was released. And beyond a few small stories here and there, O’Malley hasn’t released a lot of material. Instead, he been hard at work on his next story, Seconds. Seconds is about Katie, a talented young cook who has it all going for her until she doesn’t. Katie gets a second chance courtesy of a mysterious recipe (get it, Seconds? She’s a cook. She gets a second chance. Seconds are slang for another helping of food? Ahh, forget it). Much like Scott Pilgrim, Seconds sounds like it has a mix of the mundane and the fantastic, which has been a pretty winning formula for O’Malley in the past. Since it has been so long since Scott Pilgrim finished, I expect O’Malley to have grown as an artist, both in his writing and in his art. As a huge fan of Scott Pilgrim, I have been eagerly anticipating this one. I’m glad it’s finally in stores.

Deadly Class, Volume 1: Reagan Youth (Image Comics – $9.99) First things first, how about we mention Image Comics’ commitment to the $9.99 price point for the first volume of the trade paperbacks for most of their series? It’s always a great way to catch up on series that you may have missed. And I hope you haven’t missed out on Deadly Class, because if you have, you’ve missed out on a great first 6 issues. Deadly Class is about Marcus Lopez, a young guy living on the streets until he is recruited into a school for assassins. The set up may seem similar to Five Weapons, also from Image and also very good, but the tone could not be more dissimilar. Where Five Weapons is fun and whimsical, Deadly Class is dark and brutal, and is a very personal story for writer Rick Remender. The series is set in 1987, and the time period is perfectly captured throughout the series. The series isn’t even really about the assassin school, it’s about Marcus and his life, and it is a fascinating story. But even more than the story, Deadly Class is about the art by Wesley Craig and Lee Loughridge who bring the story to life with some dynamic layouts that have to be seen to be believed. Deadly Class is just another one of those great Image comics, and we are all so lucky to have so many of those these days.

Rat Queens #7 (Image Comics – $3.50) You want an enjoyable comic starring strong female characters with fantastic art? Rat Queens. Buy it. Get the first trade. Get issue #6. Get this issue. You will love it.

Atomic Robo and the Knights of the Golden Circle #3 (of 5) (Red 5 Comics – $3.50) On the list because it’s a new issue of Atomic Robo. You’re already buying this, right? Ahhh, of course you’re already buying it.

Life With Archie #36 (Archie Comics – $4.99) Archie dies, apparently. I hear he’ll be back next month in four different versions: Cyborg Archie, Steel Archie, Teen Archie, and Eradicator Archie.

Harley Quinn Invades Comic-Con International: San Diego #1 (DC Comics – $4.99) Well, if you can’t go to Comic-Con International: San Diego this year (and I love writing out the full name of the show whenever I get the chance), you can at least see what Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, and a host of artists have cooked up when Harley Quinn Invades Comic-Con International: San Diego. You can probably guess what happens when the Joker’s main girl hobnobs with the seriously unwashed masses, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some surprises. Conner and Palmiotti have made Harley Quinn one of the best-selling books on the stands, and if you haven’t been reading the series, this is a good chance to see what they are doing with the series, and also see them lampoon the biggest comic convention in America. It’s going to be fun, trust me.
