CONFIRMED: The Mako Is Back In ‘Mass Effect 4,’ Familiar Characters Could Return
  |  @   |

A panel was held by BioWare at San Diego Comic-Con to look at the future of the Mass Effect franchise, called “Charting a Course: Developing the next Mass Effect,” which is currently commonly referred to as Mass Effect 4—though it must be noted that this will not be the official title of the next game when it is released.

The big confirmation was that the MAKO will be back for the next game. This was somewhat expected—there would have been some outrage if it didn’t return—but it’s incredibly exciting to have confirmation. Also mentioned during the panel is that some familiar faces could return in the next game as well, which would be interesting.

For those who don’t know, the Mako is a vehicle that you could use to explore various planets and moons in the original Mass Effect. I’ll never forget when I first visited our own moon and got drive around, Earth off in the distance. It was surreal and amazing.

But, sadly, the Mako didn’t return in the game’s two sequels, replaced by tedious scanning and probe launching to search for items and points of interest and so on. So when BioWare made it a point to ask fans what they wanted most in the next game, the Mako/exploration became a top request.

That kind of space exploration is craved by geeks and gamers everywhere, which is why a game like No Man’s Sky is gaining so much buzz. The next Mass Effect doesn’t need to be “open-universe” like No Man’s Sky is aiming to be, but if it offers a large chunk of space and plenty of unique planets and moons to get lost exploring, complete with various side missions that have fresh and entertaining objectives and locations, it’s going to pay off for the final product big time.

As for returning familiar faces, it’s unclear who that might be. We know that Mass Effect 3 wrapped up the Shepard storyline, but it hasn’t been revealed yet when (or where) the next game is set, or who we the players will be playing as (another big request of fans is the ability to choose from multiple races, instead of just a male or female human).

If familiar faces are involved one way or another, the story can’t be set too far from the original trilogy unless there’s some kind of flashback or something to tie things together.

Here’s a blurry peek at the Mako. You can see more images, including an extra blurry one of the Mako actually driving around a planet, over at the Nerd Appropriate Twitter account.
