Theater Shows ‘Rise Of The Guardians’ Instead Of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’, Hilarity Ensues

It’s one of the most highly anticipated movies of the Summer – Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, which opened in theaters today. But it appears that some movie-goers who attended midnight showings for the film last night were shown a different movie – Rise of the Guardians, the 2012 computer-animated DreamWorks feature about Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman, and Jack Frost banding together to try to prevent the bogeyman Pitch Black from shrouding the world in darkness.
ABC News reported on the story, embedding various Twitter postings from movie-goers who were subjected to Rise instead of Guardians. My favorite Tweet about the incident has to be the one that says “EVERYONE IN THE THEATRE IS CRYING” when the wrong movie started playing.
omg they started playing rise of the guardians instead of guardians of the galaxy EVERYONE IN THE THEATRE IS CRYING pic.twitter.com/BOhaCboVsH
Wait, even funnier is that, according to various postings to Twitter, even after it was discovered that the wrong movie was cued up, the theater restarted the wrong film AGAIN, and then AGAIN a third time!
Oh god. They restarted it all, and after a couple repeat previews, it's Rise of the Guardians AGAIN.
I don’t know exactly how movie theaters are run, but I was under the impression that the reels get returned to the studios after the movie finishes its theatrical run, so if that’s actually the case, then I don’t even know how a 2012 movie was still available to even show. And WHY couldn’t the theater get the correct movie to play on the second and third attempts? Perhaps they were sent the wrong movie and it was labeled as Guardians, but Rise is from DreamWorks Animation (and again, it’s from 2012) and Guardians is Disney/Marvel. Maybe we’re dealing with a prankster or a fired employee’s last vengeful hurrah.
According to ABC News, the incident occurred in at least one Regal Cinemas theater and possibly in more than one of their theaters, and that the disappointed movie-goers were reimbursed for their tickets, although they’ll never get Guardians Of The Galaxy opening night back! That was a once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Most theaters are digital these days and don’t get actual film anymore. Many stream from a central source. It sounds like a database indexing error.
