It’s no surprise that there is a call to have more female-led superhero films. Marvel Studios seems to be close to cracking that glass ceiling, but has yet to make an official announcement. So with that studio trying to figure out how to go about it, Sony looks like they will be one of the first to pull the trigger on it, as they have announced that they would be releasing a female-led superhero film in their Amazing Spider-Man Cinematic Universe.
But who could it be? Spider-Woman? Black Cat? While nothing has been confirmed as to who it will be, we know that Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld, Pushing Daisies) will be the one to write the script.
This marks the third spinoff Spider-Man film to be announced in the few months since the studio revealed that it was creating its own superhero universe with its franchise character. Drew Goddard is tapped to write and direct a Sinister Six movie, while Alex Kurtzman will be writing and directing Venom.
Now the two obvious choices to lead the first female-led Spider-Man spinoff are Spider-Woman and Black Cat. The former is merely a gender swap of Spider-Man, while Black Cat, at least her alter ego, has already been introduced to the franchise. Felicity Jones played Felicia, Harry Osborn’s assistant, in the latest film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Silver Sable and Firestar have also teamed up with the webslinger in the comics, so don’t cross them off your list quite yet.
The new film would be an opportunity to expand the Spider-Man Cinematic Universe by making the character in question an ally or a foe. Whatever the case may be, it will surely have an effect on subsequent Amazing Spider-Man films and its spinoffs.
As for who Sony already hired for the project, Nolan has proven herself to be capable of good writing. First there’s the fan favorite Pushing Daisies, but she is also writing HBO’s Westworld, and even has a script on The Black List.
