‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Sequel Is Coming In 2016

Hots on the heels of its smashing box office weekend, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be getting a sequel in 2016.

Paramount greenlit the sequel, which will see Michael Bay returning to produce along with his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec will also return to write and this time executive produce as well.

The Michael Bay-produced reboot made over $65 million this weekend in its domestic opening (with an estimated $97.3M worldwide total), despite negative reviews and only a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes (read our review here). While I have yet to come across any adult who enjoyed this film, it is apparently “playing well both during the family moviegoing matinees and the older 25-to-35 demo that pushes into evening and late-night showings,” according to Deadline. So, there’s some insight for those of you wondering who exactly is to blame for the sequel getting the green light.

Paramount is, not surprisingly, very proud of their reboot of the franchise and its recent accomplishments:

“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before,” said Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group in a statement this AM. “The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”

The TMNT sequel from Nickelodeon Movies is scheduled to hit theaters on June 3, 2016.
