For this week’s roundup of the coolest upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release news we’ve got gunslingers, dragons, unusual weather phenomenon, telephone boxes that can travel through time and across the universe, and a rogue television station run by a weird guy named Al. All that plus Jenny Slate in one of the year’s most beloved comedies.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power.

Alternately known as A Fistful of Dynamite and Once Upon a Time….The Revolution, Sergio Leone‘s epic political spaghetti western Duck, You Sucker will make its Blu-ray debut on October 7, 2014 from MGM. Extras have yet to be determined, but a 2-disc Collector’s Edition DVD released in 2007 also by MGM contained a restored extended international cut, audio commentary, and several featurettes about the making of the film and the restoration effort so it’s highly possible those supplements will be included on the Blu-ray.

Barely three months from its world premiere on SyFy, Sharknado 2: The Second One is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on October 7, 2014 from Asylum-Gaiam. Both discs will reportedly feature an extended version not seen on television. Other extras have not yet been announced. Read Dr. Zaius’ review of Sharknado 2 here.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release the 186-minute Extended Cut of Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on 3-disc Blu-ray and 5-disc 3D combo pack on November 4, 2014. Extras will include:

Audio Commentary with Director/writer/producer Peter Jackson and writer/co-producer Philippa Boyens

New Zealand: Home of Middle-Earth, Part 2 – Travel with Jackson and his team across the stunning locations of New Zealand, transformed by the filmmakers into Middle-Earth.

The Appendices Part 9 & 10: The next two installments in Jackson’s sprawling “Appendices” production documentary showcase an immersive multi-part history of the filming of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, covering preproduction in the various departments of the film in the months leading up to the start of principal photography, training, the work done on set and in the world of its digital effects.

More details to come…

In the meantime, you can check out this deleted scene that will be included in the Extended Cut.

Lionsgate is releasing the acclaimed independent comedy Obvious Child on October 7, 2014 in both Blu-ray and DVD editions. Extra features will include an audio commentary with writer/director Gillian Robespierre, co-writer/producer Elizabeth Holm, and star Jenny Slate, a making-of featurette, extended scenes, and a short film. Check out FamousMonster’s review of Obvious Child here.

The eighth season of Doctor Who isn’t set to premiere until August 23, but BBC Home Entertainment has already announced that Deep Breath, the first full episode of the series to feature Peter Capaldi as the latest actor to inherit the mantle of the Time Lord, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 9, 2014. Directed by filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Kill List, A Field in England), the Steven Moffat-scripted episode will be presented in 1080p with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround. Extra features have yet to be announced.

By the way, do you remember that Blu-ray of the cult classic “Weird Al” Yankovic comedy UHF that Shout! Factory announced a few weeks ago? A release date for the 25th Anniversary Edition has been set for November 11, 2014. Though the bonus features are still being finalized, the disc has been made available for pre-order and Shout! has already unveiled the cover art.
