Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them

A familiar name to fans of the Harry Potter mega-franchise looks to be stepping back into that magical world.

It’s being reported that David Yates, who directed Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has agreed to return to franchise to direct Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

A deal hasn’t been finalized, but Yates and Warner Brothers are currently in negotiations. The spinoff is being planned as a new trilogy, but it appears that Yates would only be directing the first of the three movies, at least for the moment. He’s currently filming Tarzan, which stars Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd and Margot Robbie.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a textbook from the Harry Potter universe about the many magical creatures found around the world. It is mentioned in the first book Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone. The movie is set in New York 70 years before the events of the Harry Potter movies, and follows the adventures of author and magizoologist Newt Scamander as he compiles his data on these fascinating creatures.

Potter author J.K. Rowling had this to say about the spinoff trilogy:

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, “˜Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.”

Rowling herself will be writing the screenplay for the movie, which currently has a November 18, 2016 release date locked in.

No actor has been cast yet for the role of Newt Scamander, who is in his early 20s at the time the movie is set.
