The Digital Wire Blu-ray/DVD Release News: Murder, Morbidity, Maturation, Mischief
  |

Another week, another edition of The Digital Wire here at Geeks of Doom. Try not to look so enthusiastic. Major Blu-ray/DVD release announcements were scant this week, but news of some interesting titles soon to make their way to multiple home viewing platforms wasn’t, so I’ve compiled the best of the odds ‘n’ ends. We’ve got undead girlfriends, some Southern-fried slaughter, mismatched cops tearing up the Windy City, salacious studio hilarity, and one of the best-reviewed motion pictures of 2014. So I guess that last one is a pretty major announcement. My bad.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power.

Lionsgate will release the romantic horror-comedy Life After Beth just in time for Halloween. Starring Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation), Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), John C. Reilly (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Molly Shannon (Wet Hot American Summer), the movie comes to Blu-ray with the following bonus features:

Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Jeff Baena, Actors Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan and Matthew Gray Gubler
“Life After Beth: The Post Mortem” featurette
Deleted Scenes

The street date for Life After Beth is October 21, 2014.

One of the best films of 2014 (so far), Jim Mickle‘s violent, sleaze-dipped Joe R. Lansdale adaptation Cold in July will be making its way to Blu-ray on September 30, 2014 courtesy of MPI Home Video. No extras have been announced yet but video releases of previous Mickle films like Stake Land and We Are Who We Are were not particularly light on the supplements front. Expect Cold in July to follow suit.

The raucous R-rated comedy Sex Tape, directed by Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) and starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, is making a hasty retreat to home video after failing to make much of an impact on the summer box office. Sony will release the film to Blu-ray and DVD on October 21, 2014. Extra features include:

Deleted & Extended Scenes
Bloopers
Line-O-Rama
And More…

Maybe the video and streaming audiences will be more forgiving of this sub-standard, itching-to-be-risque studio comedy than the theatrical crowds.

One of the surprise arthouse hits of the year, Richard Linklater‘s critically-adored epic drama Boyhood was released theatrically by IFC Films and has been picked up for home video release by Paramount Home Media Distribution. The film will be released later this year on both Blu-ray and DVD. Extras have yet to be determined. Read FamousMonster’s review of Boyhood from March’s South by Southwest festival here.

Actor-comedian Billy Crystal and actor-dancer Gregory Hines as a pair of wisecracking Chicago cops going up against a drug lord played by Jimmy Smits? From Peter Hyams, the director of 2010 and Timecop, comes the very fun and very 80’s action-comedy Running Scared, which will be making its Blu-ray premiere on December 9, 2014 from Kino Lorber, cheeseball soundtrack and all (oh Michael McDonald, if I have to hear “Sweet Freedom” one more time I’m going to “Yah Mo” burn this place to the ground). The disc is not yet up for pre-order but we do have a listing of the bonus features we can expect:

New Audio Commentary by Director Peter Hyams
Original Theatrical Trailer
Optional English Subtitles

Did you hear that? Optional English subtitles! I’m looking forward to hearing that Hyams commentary. What more do I have to say to sell y’all on this Blu? Did I mention that Joe Pantoliano is in this playing a guy named Snake and he sports a frakkin’ mowhawk? There’s also a pretty badass car chase on the Chicago “El” tracks. Behold….

Out This Week

Hell of the Living Dead/Rats – Night of Terror: Blu-ray

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s The Dance of Reality: Blu-ray|DVD

The Walking Dead – The Complete Fourth Season: Blu-ray|DVD

Those are the highlights of this week. Come back same time next week for more of the coolest home video news tidbits on the web.
