HBO To Turn ‘Shutter Island’ Into A TV Series; Martin Scorsese May Direct
  |  @   |

It is the final season of Martin Scorsese‘s Boardwalk Empire, and as the HBO Prohibition drama comes to an end, the director is looking to continue his working relationship with the cable channel by turning one of his directorial efforts into a televised series.

Deadline reports that Scorsese’s feature film Shutter Island is being developed into a television series titled Ashcliffe. The series will be written by novelist/screenwriter Dennis Lehane – who wrote the original novel – with both Scorsese and the film’s star Leonardo DiCaprio on board as executive producers. The plan is to get Scorsese to direct the pilot. Hit the jump to learn more about the series.

Ashecliffe, which is the name of the isolated mental hospital where the 2010 film is set, will take place years before the events of the psychological thriller . “The focus is the past of hospital, and the secrets and misdeeds perpetrated by its founders who erected the hospital in the early 20th Century and developed the methods of treatment use for the mentally ill.”

The idea of Ashcliffe originated from Paramount TV head Amy Powell, who brought it to Scorsese.

As a fan of the original, it is going to be exciting to see how Ashecliffe will tackle the quasi-horror and mystery thriller aspects into a televised series. I didn’t see much of season two of American Horror Story, which took place in a similar setting, so I really can’t compare. But with Lehane on as series writer and Scorsese attached to direct the pilot, I’m sure Ashcliffe is in good hands, and hopefully will have a nice run for a couple of years.
