‘Dragon Age: Inquisition’ Will Have Multiplayer

BioWare's Dragon: Age Inquisition

BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition was already one of the most anticipated games of the year, thanks to the massive fanbase behind the developer’s previous games in the series and, of course, the Mass Effect trilogy.

But now comes confirmation of another feature of the game that may or may not have fans even more excited, if that’s at all possible. Not only will Inquisition have the single-player campaign you’ve been anticipating for the past handful of years—one that’s said to run around 200 hours for you completionists out there—but it will also include a separate multiplayer option.

You can read more about what to expect from the multiplayer action below.

Now usually with a game like Dragon Age, hearing that precious time, effort, and disc space has been dedicated to multiplayer instead of focusing all power (you know…like a Care Bear Stare!) on making the single-player campaign the best it can possibly be could be a little disheartening to some fans. But things are a little different in this case.

BioWare has already danced in the realms of multiplayer, taking a chance on the option for Mass Effect 3, and they danced really freakin’ well, surprisingly. ME3‘s multiplayer is the best, most enjoyable I’ve personally experienced in gaming. A big reason for this being that there’s no player vs. player; no opponents out there finding ways to make their characters ungodly powerful in ridiculously short amounts of time to murder you before you even have a clue what’s going on. No, this multiplayer has you playing with a few friends, and taking on wave after wave of various AI enemies. The better you do, the more you earn. The more you earn, the better cases you can purchase that are filled with random weapons, ammo, new characters, and other goodies. And if you ever got too good, you could always up the difficulty. Bronze was a challenge at first. Silver was very difficult, but beatable. Gold and Platinum absolutely untouchable—a nightmare of enemies overwhelming you in the blink of an eye. But as you unlock new characters and weapons and level them up, you find yourself being able to do a little better. Getting a full extraction on Platinum with a full team is one of my most precious gaming achievements to date.

As for Dragon Age: Inquisition, it sounds like the multiplayer will share similarities with Mass Effect 3, but also offer an experience unique to the game.

Once again it will be you and three of your friends taking on waves of enemies. You’ll start on a large map with many smaller areas you’ll work your way through. In addition to fighting through the enemies, you’ll also be searching for loot, and sometimes that loot might be unattainable. There are areas only accessible to certain classes, such as mages or warriors. If you don’t have one of these on your team when they’re required, you miss out on that treasure. These things will change with each match to always keep things mixed up.

Like with Mass Effect 3, loot you obtain can be used to purchase treasure chests with various goodies inside, such as potions, recipes, new items/equipment, and sometimes new characters. And in some cases, if you don’t want or need something, you’ll be able to break it down and use the salvaged pieces to construct things you do want.

Best of all, none of this will cost money if you don’t want it to. There is a way to buy stuff you don’t feel like earning, but that’s entirely up to you. And because it’s not PvP, you don’t have to worry about those who do pay for the quick boost having an unfair advantage over you…apart from maybe getting more kills.

You can read much more about the Dragon Age: Inquisition multiplayer by heading on over to IGN, and stay tuned for any gameplay demos of the multiplayer that may be released soon.
