Monday, September 1st, 2014 at 7:30 pm
The Digital Wire returns and is packing more DVD and Blu-ray announcements than usual. This week we’ve got a brain pan-searing cornucopia of summer blockbusters and offbeat indie flicks as well as a mammoth box set guaranteed to bring joy into the life of that Doctor Who fan close to your heart.
Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.
A cult classic in the making, the action-horror-comedy Wolfcop has been announced for Blu-ray just in time for Halloween. Sadly it will only be available in HD in the U.K. for now. StudioCanal will release writer-director Lowell Dean‘s breakthrough feature on October 13, 2014 (a Monday, not a Friday) and the special features have not yet been revealed. Since it barely got any theatrical play Wolfcop requires one dandy disc to justify its purchase price and reach a wider audience on home video. You can pre-order the film on Blu-ray and DVD. Need another reason to buy Wolfcop? Check out this review by Geeks of Doom’s own FamousMonster!
Zack Braff‘s Kickstarter-funded indie dramedy Wish I Was Here didn’t make much of an impression on moviegoers, but it’s bound to do a bit better on video. Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release the film in a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD combo pack on October 28, 2014. Extra features will include:
Feature Commentary with Co-Writer/Director/Producer Zach Braff and Co-Writer/Producer Adam Braff
Feature Commentary with Co-Writer/Director/Producer Zach Braff, Director of Photography Lawrence Sher, and Editor Myron Kerstein
Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary with Co-Writer/Director/Producer Zach Braff, Director of Photography Lawrence Sher, and Editor Myron Kerstein
Directing While Acting
Aston Martin Dealership Outtakes
Wish I Was Here co-stars Kate Hudson, Joey King, Mandy Patinkin, Josh Gad, and Ashley Greene and will be presented in 1080p with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround. If your Blu-ray collection is lacking in twee your prayers must have been answered.
Bong Joon-ho‘s dystopian sci-fi adventure Snowpiercer battled the dark forces of studio executives who wanted to cut its brains and gonads off to satisfy the less-demanding movie audiences in the heartland and went on to earn some respectable reviews and box office during its nationwide arthouse roll-out this summer. The film will be making its home video premiere courtesy of the Weinstein Company and Anchor Bay Home Entertainment on October 21, 2014. Extra features on the Blu-ray release will include:
Critics’ Audio Commentary Hosted By Scott Weinberg
The Train Brought To Life: Behind The Scenes Of A Special Screening
TRANSPERCENEIGE: From The Blank Page To The Black Screen
The Birth Of Snowpiercer
Concept Art Galleries
Chris Evans & Tilda Swinton On Snowpiercer
A DVD edition will also be available. Read FamousMonster’s review of Snowpiercerhere.
Now that Peter Capaldi is firmly entrenched as the latest actor to assume the role of the whimsical Time Lord BBC Home Entertainment will be paying tribute to his predecessor in the form of the 16-disc Blu-ray box set Doctor Who: The Complete Matt Smith Years. The set will be released on November 4, 2014 and will include all five seasons featuring Smith as the Doctor including every Christmas special, The Time of the Doctor, and the 50th Anniversary Special The Day of the Doctor presented in both 3D and 2D. The 2013 television film An Adventure in Space and Time about the creation of Doctor Who will also be available in this set.
The Complete Matt Smith Years will come packaged in a collectible lay-flat book. By way of special features we can anticipate the 2013 Doctor Who Proms Concert, two episodes Sarah Jane Adventures featuring Smith, The Five(ish) Doctors, and more.
What exactly is Zombeavers, you might ask? The answer would obviously be a low-budget horror-comedy about undead beavers who decide to snack on some college kids vacationing in a cabin for the weekend when the taste of wood no longer satisfies their cravings. From the producers of Cabin Fever and The Ring, Zombeavers doesn’t have a Stateside home video release date yet but this demented genre hybrid will be making its way to Blu-ray and DVD on October 20, 2014 from Universal Studios UK. Special features will include deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and more yet to be announced. Both releases will be Region Free so they can be played on U.S. Blu-ray and DVD players.
The pleasingly retro sci-fi comedy Space Station 76 is coming to DVD only on September 30, 2014 after earning some mixed reviews on the film festival circuit. Starring Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler, and Matt Bomer, 76 marks the feature directorial debut of actor Jack Plotnick (Wrong) and bonus features on the DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will include the “Zero Gravity: Making Space Station 76” behind-the-scenes featurette, outtakes, and deleted scenes.
