Shazam DC Comics Header Image

It’s only been a few hours since it was announced that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would play Black Adam in Shazam. While it was thought that this news meant that Shazam’s introduction might be included in Justice League, New Line’s Toby Emmerich has said that possibility is slim to none. The film will still have the DC brand name attached to it, but Shazam will be produced under New Line’s banner, which is actually a branch of WB. That being said, it is unlikely that the hero will be accepted into the DC Cinematic Universe.

Hit the jump for the full quote.

From an interview with EW, Emmerich said:

“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”

Emmerich’s quote does hint at WB’s no funny policy in their DC Comics films. We don’t know much about the movie yet, and Emmerich is sworn to silence since it’s in early development, but Emmerich says that it “…will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real.” This pretty much guarantees that Shazam won’t be joining Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, or any other heroes that could pop up in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Here’s how Emmerich described the character:

“Black Adam is a complex character. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”

As for Shazam, the character is actually about a boy, who once shouts the word Shazam and becomes the titular alter ego. Shazam’s powers and abilities are actually combination of six different mythological personalities ranging from of the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.

Now as to how they will portray the character, it could be portrayed by the same actor with digital work done like Mark Ruffalo being Dr. Bruce Banner and the Hulk in The Avengers, or we could see two different actors play a younger Billy Batson and older more muscle tone Shazam.

Are you hoping that Shazam does end up on the Justice League? Would you like to see Billy Batson and Shazam be played by the same actors or different actors?

  1. WTF he is not called SHAZAM the character’s name is Captain Marvel and the Word of Power used to transform is SHAZAM and yes he has been in the Justice League it would be a shame if they mess this up.
