The Digital Wire Blu-ray/DVD Release News: Breed, Bikers, Blood, Bob-Ombs, and the Beeb
  |

For this week’s edition of The Digital Wire we’ve got more new Blu-ray and DVD release news than a single human being should be legally permitted to process, including some bonus features updates for a few titles on which we have previously reported. There’s so much good stuff here that for many of us our bank accounts are going to be shedding a little weight this autumn.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

Back in July we revealed that the highly anticipated home video debut of Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut, which finally restores Clive Barker‘s epic horror-fantasy to its intended length and form, had been set for this October in two different editions. The 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie had everything a healthy potential summer blockbuster needed: lavish budget, recognizable actors, expensive visual effects, and a connection to one of the most popular video game franchises in human history. Unfortunately it lacked an original story, enthusiastic performances, and the sense that it wasn’t the product of a studio and filmmaking crew that had no idea what kind of film they wanted to make even after it got the green light. The movie flopped so hard with critics and audiences that even The Last Action Hero couldn’t help but shake its head sadly, but in the past two decades Super Mario Bros. has gained a cult following thanks to strong video and DVD sales and cable airings.

U.K. distributor Second Sight Films will be bringing the sole big-screen adventure of plunger-wielding Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi to Region B Blu-ray on November 3, 2014. This Ain’t No Video Game – A brand new 60 minute documentary featuring new interviews with: Co-directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, Producer Roland Joffe, Actors John Leguizamo and Richard Edson, Writer Parker Bennett, Production Designer David Snyder, Art Director Walter Martishius, FX Artists Paul Elliot, Vincent Guastini and Rob Burman, Visual FX Designer Chris Woods, Editor Mark Goldblatt and Creature Designer Patrick Tatopoulos.

For anyone who came of age in the late 1980s and thought of watching cartoons on Saturday morning as a necessary ritual of childhood the forthcoming Blu-ray release of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: The Complete Series is sure to be one of 2014’s most eagerly awaited video debuts.

Each of the series’ 45 episodes has been restored from their original film negatives and the set will include over four hours of behind-the-scenes footage and brand new interviews with star/creator Paul Reubens and various members of the cast and crew, including actors Laurence Fishburne (Cowboy Curtis), S. Epatha Merkerson (Reba the mail lady), Lynne Marie Stewart (Miss Yvonne), and John Paragon (Jambi the genie), composers Mark Mothersbaugh and Danny Elfman, production designers Gary Panter, Wayne White, and Ric Heitzman, animation supervisor Prudence Fenton, animators Peter Lord and David Sproxton, make-up artist Ve Neill, and many more.

These interviews and vintage production footage will be presented in the form of ten new retrospective featurettes:

Building the Playhouse, Opening the Playhouse, Writing for the Playhouse, The Look of the Playhouse, Music of the Playhouse, The Cast of the Playhouse, Puppets of the Playhouse, Animating the Playhouse, A Very Merry Christmas Special, and Fans and Memorabilia of the Playhouse
