Alex Kurtzman Talks Darker Venom Spinoff Movie
  |  @   |

The Venom we saw in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 wasn’t really the Venom Spider-Man fans wanted to see, but it was as close to seeing the alien symbiote on the big screen as we were going to get. The character is most known for sharing the same abilities as Spider-Man, but also having some distinguishing ones like being able to block Spider-Man’s Spider Sense and limited shapeshifting.

For Alex Kurtzman, we can expect to see a Venom that is much darker than “your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,” in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man spinoff film of the same name. Hit the jump to see his comments.

In an interview with MTV, Kurtzman said:

“Well, Venom is sort of the flip side in that there are certain lines that Spider-Man won’t cross because he’s Peter Parker and Peter Parker will only do certain things and Venom is an entirely different character. Venom, in a weird way, is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He’s a much darker character. I wouldn’t even really say more complicated because I think they’re both very complicated characters, but I think the attraction for me to Venom is the idea that you can do things that you can’t do with Spider-Man.”

Venom made his first comic appearance in Marvel’s Secret Wars crossover as an alien symbiote that bonded to Spider-Man’s suit when Peter Parker needed to repair his suit. Spider-Man then brought the suit back home with him after the war was over, and then discovered that the suit was trying to permanently bond with its host. The symbiote then found a new host in Eddie Brock, a disgraced Daily Bugle journalist. For years Eddie Brock served as a formidable opponent to Spider-Man, and at times he teamed up with the webslinger to fight Venom’s symbiote spawn Carnage.

In the comics, the suit would switch hosts from the son of a mobster to Mac Gargan aka Scorpion, another iconic Spider-Man villain.

However the new film franchise seems to be focused on the Ultimate comics, which gives Venom a different origins story. In the Ultimate version, Venom is created from Peter Parker’s DNA. Hosts included Parker, Brock, and Harry Osborn.

It should be interesting to see which direction Kurtzman takes for this film or if he pulls elements from both versions and creates a new version of Venom. No one has been cast as the host or titular character, and no release date has been set at this time.
