BAADASSSSS!   |

22 Jump Street Movie Review by Adam Frazier

Welcome to another edition of The Digital Wire, your one-stop resource for the coolest movie and television releases on Blu-ray and DVD yet to come. This week we’ve got an oddball assortment of summer smashes, sci-fi scares, swirling sharks, and more.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

22 Jump Street

It’s all too rare when a sequel to a successful comedy feature is able to equal, and occasionally surpass, the quality of the original. That’s exactly what happened with this summer’s hilarious, surprisingly metatextual blockbuster 22 Jump Street. With Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of 2012’s instant comedy classic 21 Jump Street, back at the helm and original stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum bumbling and blowing stuff up, 22 Jump was one of the best times to be had at the theater this year. Just in time for the start of the holiday shopping season the movie comes to Blu-ray and DVD on November 18, 2014. Bonus features will include:

Five Deleted and Extended Scenes
The Perfect Couple of Directors
Line-O-Rama
Audio Commentary with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Channing Tatum, and Jonah Hill
Seventeen Additional Deleted and Extended Scenes
Four Additional Line-O-Ramas
Joke-A-Palooza
Everything is Better in College

Alien

2014 marks the 35th anniversary of Ridley Scott‘s groundbreaking sci-fi/horror masterpiece Alien. To celebrate the occasion 20th Fox Home Entertainment is releasing a special edition of the film on Blu-ray on October 7, 2014. Special features are set to include:

Includes the 1979 Theatrical Version and 2003 Director’s Cut!
Audio Commentary by Director Ridley Scott, Cast and Crew
Audio Commentary by Ridley Scott (Theatrical Version Only)
Introduction by Ridley Scott (Director’s Cut Only)
Final Theatrical Isolated Score by Jerry Goldsmith
Composer’s Original Isolated Score by Jerry Goldsmith
Deleted and Extended Scenes
Digital HD
Alien Illustrated Comic
Collectible Art Cards

Outside of a comic and art cards that will probably be packaged inside the Blu-ray case there won’t be anything on here that hasn’t been available on the previous single-disc release or the fantastic Alien Anthology box set from 2010. I know that consumers who aren’t too sweet on the Alien sequels won’t mind owning just the original but there are still a lot of great supplements related to the film that won’t be making the cut.

Kingdom of Heaven

Speaking of Ridley Scott, the filmmaker’s underrated 2005 Crusades epic Kingdom of Heaven will be returning to Blu-ray the same day as the Alien: 35th Anniversary Edition Blu in a two-disc Ultimate Edition set that will feature not only three different cuts of the film (including the director’s preferred extended cut) but also all of the fantastic bonus features that could be found on the four-disc 2006 box set, sadly now out of print. Those extras will include:

All Three Versions of the Film
Theatrical Version
Extended Director’s Cut Version
Director’s Cut “Road Show” Version
Introduction by Director Sir Ridley Scott
Pilgrim’s Guide Trivia Track
The Engineer’s Guide Trivia Track
Roadshow Commentary with Orlando Bloom, Ridley Scott and Writer William Monahan
The Path to Redemption
Sound Design Suite
Visual Effects Breakdowns
Press Junket Walkthrough
World Premieres
Special Shoot Gallery
Poster Explorations
A&E Movie Real
History vs. Hollywood
Orlando Bloom “The Adventure of a Lifetime”
Featurettes and More

In spite of its flaws Kingdom of Heaven is a great film made with intelligence, passion, and respect for people of all religions. This will be a first day buy for me.

Doctor Who

BBC Home Entertainment has set a release date of December 9, 2014 for Doctor Who: The Complete Eighth Series on Blu-ray and DVD. Extra features have yet to be revealed but the set will include all twelve episodes starring Peter Capaldi as the Time Lord presented in 1080p with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround.
