Fox To Bring DC’s ‘Sandman’ Spinoff ‘Lucifer’ To TV
  |  @   |

We were teased for year with the prospect of a television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s DC/Vertigo Comics series Sandman, but that eventually turned into plans for a big screen adaptation. Now, a character from the Sandman universe will be making its way to the small screen from Warner Bros. TV and FOX for DC Entertainment.

FOX has committed to producing a “put pilot” for Lucifer, DC/Vertigo’s Sandman spin-off comic book series written by Mike Carey (Unwritten, Hellblazer), according to Deadline. Tom Kapinos, creator/executive producer for Californication, along with Warner Bros. TV — the company behind all the DC universe television projects (including the upcoming Batman prequel series Gotham) — are behind the pilot.

Lucifer will join the other DC universe television shows: Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, and Constantine, as well as planned series for Supergirl and Titans for TNT network.

The Lucifer comic book series is one of my favorites of all time, next to Sandman, and was a perfect spin-off to Gaiman’s series. The title character — the Lord of Hell — becomes tired and bored of his extremely lengthy reign in Hell, so he leaves his regular digs behind to live a life on Earth as a club owner in Los Angeles. But, of course, his carefree retirement is disrupted by his former associates and other powerful beings.

Not much is known so far about the television series, which is written and executive produced by Kapinos, except that it “centers on Lucifer who, bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he opens an exclusive piano bar called Lux.” The put pilot commitment means that FOX will have to actually air the pilot or face financial penalties. It’s obvious that DC is building a strong TV universe, and the addition of Lucifer will hopefully succeed in strengthening it.
