DC’s ‘Supergirl’ Series To Air On CBS
  |  @   |

DC and Marvel have found a way to bring some of their lesser-known characters to life via televised series. Arrow has found huge success through its own show, which eventually led to The Flash spinoff, while Marvel is keeping everything in the same universe with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter on ABC.

With Constantine set to debut this Fall on NBC and FOX premiering their Batman-prequel series Gotham, we are slowly seeing more and more lesser-known characters get TV series as opposed to being part of a film franchise, which which works in everybody’s favor considering not all heroes are meant to be topliners. TNT recently announced that they would have a Teen Titans series from I Am Legend producer Akiva Goldsman and Marc Haimes. And now it has been announced that the live-action Supergirl show has landed over at CBS. Hit the jump for more.

THR reports that the series will be executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow) and Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family). With the Berlanti connection, there is a slight chance that there could be crossovers with the Arrow and Flash franchise, but I’m not sure how the networks would respond to that idea, we’ll just have to wait and see.

According the trade, CBS is “handing out a hefty series commitment.”

Supergirl marks Berlanti’s third televised series based on DC characters. His other two, Arrow and The Flash, both air on THE CW.

The news couldn’t have come at a more exciting time with audiences calling for more female-led superhero films and series. We’ll be getting Marvel’s Agent Carter, as a mid-season debut, in January of next year.

Supergirl will be an “hourlong drama … that centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”
