HBO has confirmed that both Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will be starring in season two of True Detective. The two actors were among the names reported to be in talks for the anthology series early last month.

Also confirmed is that Fast and the Furious (Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6) and Better Luck Tomorrow director Justin Lin will be behind the camera for the first two episodes of the sophomore season. Cary Joji Fukunaga directed the entire eight-episode first season.

As for what the new season will be about, a brief logline describes it as: “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.”

Farrell will play one of the cops, named Ray Velcoro, described by HBO as a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.

Vaughn plays the career criminal, Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

Casting announcements for the other roles should be expected soon. The second season will begin production later this fall in California.

True Detective is created and written by Nick Pizzolatto.
