Saturday night at New York Comic-Con, fans got another chance to watch the Constantine TV pilot, Episode 1.1 “Non Est Asylum,” in Empire Stage 1-E. Based on the DC Comics character from Hellblazer (DC’s Vertigo imprint) then Constantine series, John Constantine is an exorcist, demonologist, and master of the dark arts (or petty dabbler as Constantine would say). His soul is damned to hell with no hope for redemption (or is there?).
After the viewing of the pilot (which we talked about here — full review to come), there was a short audience Q&A with writer David S. Goyer and stars Matt Ryan (Constantine) and Angelica Celaya (Zed), which got right to the heart of it.
Q-Tell us about Zed.
Angelica-She’s a little badass. She doesn’t stand for BS.
Q-What’s the most interesting thing about playing Constantine?
Matt-He’s a three-dimensional multi-faceted character. It’s true to the DNA of the comic book but trying to make it my own. I’m getting to know him more and more. It’s been a hell of a ride and awesome to play.
David-We’re about to shoot mid-season thing. [they all smile] I love cliffhangers.
Q-You face off with the devil in the episode.
Matt-Yeah. That was so much fun. I could hardly see though because of the contact lenses.
Q-What was it about Matt that said, ‘That’s my guy in the trench coat.’
David-I had to stick to my beliefs. He sent in a self audition that was horribly lit. He had a Sasquatch beard. And I was like, ‘This is the guy.’ And they [exec] were like, ‘No.’ So I subtly sabotaged auditions and I must have done a good job because three weeks later it was, ‘Maybe it’s the guy.’ Then he shaved his beard and it was, ‘Ohh…this IS the guy.’
Q-There’s some artful language.
David-I’m surprised at what we’ve been able to get away with. And the cigarette….where is it gonna be?
Q-Anything exclusive or scoopy?
David- Scoopy? Corrigan…and you saw the little nod to him in that first episode. Lucifer-first of the fallen. You’re not gonna see him, but you’ll hear his voice.
[To audience]-What characters do you want to see?
[Shouts of Lucifer, Raven, Corrigan.]
