The Avengers Iron Man and Captain America

When Robert Downey Jr.‘s contract with Marvel was redone, it only entailed him to be in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and one other Avengers films. But curiosity started to arise when RDJ began talking Iron Man 4 during his The Judge press tour. While it was confirmed that there was no Iron Man 4 was in the works, many were wondering why the actor was pushing Marvel Studios during a movie press tour that had no Marvel connections. He did mention that Marvel had one huge announcement to make, and this would certainly qualify as a huge announcement.

Variety reports that Tony Stark will be joining Captain America 3. While the news of the casting is confirmed, it has started a rumor that Stark’s involvement could mean that the MCU would be headed towards the Civil War storyline instead of Infinity Gauntlet. Hit the jump for more.

We won’t jump the gun on confirming that RDJ’s casting means there will be a Civil War storyline for a few reasons, one of which being that the planning doesn’t quite line up with what we have seen. Much of the plot of the MCU revolves around the Infinity Stones, although Age Of Ultron may deviate from it, and the conclusion of that film may actually lead to the Civil War storyline. Which would mean that the Infinity Gauntlet storyline may be in Avengers 4.

In Civil War, the government are requiring heroes to register that they have powers and/or abilities. But Captain America would lead a group of heroes who are anti-registration against Iron Man who is pro-registration. So if Civil War would indeed be the storyline in Captain America 3, this would mean that Iron Man would be the villain of the film.

It would also mean that something cataclysmic would need to happen in Age of Ultron to get the two heroes on opposite sides of the ring. Remember, Age of Ultron marks the end of Phase 2, with Ant-Man introducing Phase 3 and followed by other subsequent heroes like Doctor Strange and maybe even Spider-Man.

At first Downey Jr. was asked to appear in Captain America 3 for a very small role, but the actor argued for a more substantial role, which of course would mean a bigger payday. This would not sit well with Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter, who was so angry with the request that he asked writers to scrub out Stark’s involvement entirely. But Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige convinced him to work out a deal.

Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Captain America 3 will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. It is scheduled for a May 6, 2016 opening.
