Many of you have wanted it for a long, long time now, and today HBO made it official: a standalone cable-free HBO GO service will be made available at some point in 2015.
This of course means that instead of having Comcast or another cable provider and paying extra for HBO—a current requirement in order to use HBO GO and watch your favorite shows and movies on your tablet or gaming console and so on—you’ll soon have the option to pay a certain fee just to use HBO GO. Ideal for those of you watch Game of Thrones on a loop all day every day. Don’t judge! I’m studying the symbolism, and counting snowflakes…because math!
HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler made the announcement, saying they were ready to “use all measures” to go after homes that don’t currently have access to HBO:
“There is huge opportunity in front of us”¦ we will use all means at our disposal to go after it. This is the most exciting inflection point domestically and internationally in the history of HBO.”
An online-only cable-free HBO GO option has been discussed for a while now, and trials of the service in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark have worked out well after some kinks were ironed out.
