‘The Gambler’ Red Band Trailer: Mark Wahlberg and John Goodman Exchange Four-Letter Expletives

Those who have been waiting for a great trailer to talk about, your wait ends here. Paramount Pictures has just debuted the teaser trailer for Rupert Wyatt‘s The Gambler, starring Mark Wahlberg as a literature professor who moonlights as a high-rolling gambler. The film is actually a remake of the 1974 drama of the same name.

Now we’ve all seen remakes and films about gambling before, but this teaser really sets the bar pretty high with limited footage and choice words. And because we see so very little of the film in this trailer, which runs under two minutes, we get more compelling drama and more reasons to watch the trailer over and over again. But beware, the trailer doesn’t hold back on a certain four-letter word, so I suggest you put some headphones on or wait until you find some privacy to see it. Hit the jump to check it out.

In the film Wahlberg plays Jim Bennett, a college literature professor who is also a high-stakes gambler with a large debt to pay off. In order to pay off his debt, Jim will have to make some desperate choices that will have an impact on those close to him.

Here’s a full synopsis:

Jim Bennett (Academy Award®-nominee Mark Wahlberg) is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award®-winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance”¦

The Gambler opens in limited theaters on December 19th, and expands on January 2.
