This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly offers us our first official look at the next entry in the Terminator franchise, titled Terminator: Genisys, as well as some…interesting…story details.

The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in his usual T-800 role, Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as John Connor, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney (Live Free or Die Hard) as Kyle Reese, and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as a close ally of John’s. But while the characters are mostly the same, the characters’ backgrounds are not what we’re familiar with.

This newest take on the franchise is set in the year 2029 when the Future War against the machines is being waged, and a group of human rebels are taking it to Skynet. These rebels are led by John Connor, who’s followed by loyal soldier Kyle Reese. Similarly to the first movie, Connor sends Reese back in time to save his mother Sarah Connor from being killed by a terminator, but what he discovers when he gets there is not what he expected.

As for Sarah Connor, her background is quite different from what we’re familiar with—different from the Sarah we saw played by Linda Hamilton in the original and T2. In this movie, she was orphaned by a terminator when she was nine years old, leading her to be raised by Schwarzenegger’s older T-800 model terminator, whom she now calls “Pops.”

I’ll let that sink in for just a moment.

Right then. This upbringing has resulted in Sarah being well-trained in the use of weaponry and such, but also her becoming an antisocial shut-in. She rejects what’s she’s been told was meant to happen, and it’s her choice that alters the course of the movie’s story.

Terminator: Genisys is directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World), and the first of a planned trilogy is currently set to be released

You can read and see more in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, which hits shelves this Friday.
