It was only a matter of time before someone made a movie entirely in the same style as popular first-person shooter video games, such as the Call of Duty franchise. With Hardcore, that time has arrived.
The movie comes from director Ilya Naishuller, who made a short film/music video in the first-person style. That video has scored millions of views, and caught the attention of Wanted, Night Watch/Day Watch, and the upcoming Ben-Hur director Timur Bekmambetov who proposed producing a feature shot completely using the POV style. Fearing it was too “gimmicky” Naishuller declined Bekmambetov’s offer at first, but after a little convincing he changed his mind.
While it might be a bit of a gimmick and would grow old fast if done too often, there’s no denying that Hardcore looks like a hell of a lot of over-the-top fun. You can read more about the movie and check out a few videos below, including a preview of the movie, some awesome behind-the-scenes peeks, and the original music video that inspired Hardcore.
HARDCORE is a modern, action Sci-Fi story about HENRY, a newly resurrected cyborg who must save his wife/creator ESTELLE (Haley Bennet) from the clutches of a psychotic tyrant with telekinetic powers, AKAN (Danila Kozlovsky), and his army of mercenaries. Fighting alongside Henry is JIMMY (Sharlto Copley), who is Henry’s only hope to make it through the day. Hardcore takes place over the course of one day, in Moscow, Russia and it’s all shot in the same style as BAD MOTHERFUCKER to be released in cinemas worldwide.
If curious, this is the rig that was used to make the movie. It was shot almost entirely using a GoPro camera, paired with this custom-made rig.
The movie is already filmed and edited; all that’s left is post-production work. That’s where crowdfunding comes into play. They knew going in that they’d need to find more money at some point, either by going to studios or through crowdfunding. In order to avoid having any money people trying to change the movie they’ve made, they chose the latter. Their goal is $250,000, and they’ve already raised over $70,000 with about 30 days to go.
The first of the three videos below is just the preview scene from Hardcore so you can see what it looks like. After that is the crowdfunding pitch video they made, which might be a better place to start. It includes a ton of awesome behind-the-scenes footage showing some insane stunts and practical effects, and ends with the full preview shown in the first video. Finally, the music video that Naishuller made that led to this movie in case you’ve never seen it.
All of these should be considered semi-NSFW due to violence and blood and such.
