The Digital Wire Blu-ray/DVD Release News: For The Week Of 11/11/2014

For this week’s edition of The Digital Wire we’ve got a slim selection of offbeat titles from the film and television domains, including one influential horror classic. Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

Featuring the voice talents of Ben Kingsley, Simon Pegg, Elle Fanning, Nick Frost, and Tracy Morgan, the animated feature The Boxtrolls will be released on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD by Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Focus Features on January 20, 2015. Extra features have yet to be revealed but both Blu-ray editions will also include DVD copies and Digital HD downloads.

One of the hallmarks of the 1920’s German silent cinema, Robert Wiene‘s expressionistic horror classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has been restored in 4K resolution from the original camera negative and this stunning new transfer will be released on Blu-ray and DVD by Kino Lorber on November 18, 2014. Among the new bonus features we can expect are an illustrated booklet essay by Kristin Thompson, the 52-minute documentary “Caligari: How Horror Came to the Cinema”, and an alternate audio track featuring a new music score composed for this edition by DJ Spooky.

Check out this video for a look at the new transfer and a sample of the new DJ Spooky score.

The fifth season of the hit FX animated series Archer is coming to Blu-ray and DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on January 6, 2015. Both sets will include all thirteen episodes of the absurd adult spy spoof along with the featurettes “Old MacDonald Pam Poovey Had a Farm, The Musical” and “Cherlene Tunt Interview on Wake Up Country” and a music video for “Midnight Blues” by Cherlene Tunt.

A U.S. release date has been set for The Guest, Adam Wingard‘s genre-blending thriller. After opening to positive reviews in limited release early this fall the film will make its debut on Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment on January 6, 2015. The extra features are set to include a commentary with Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett, deleted scenes with optional commentary by the director and writer, and a Q&A with star Dan Stevens.
