Josh Trank‘s Fantastic Four could have changes that would be welcomed by most fans. Though the changes aren’t radical, they would give the film a more contemporary feel. But Toby Kebbell, who will play the film’s villain Doctor Doom, recently dropped a few details about the character he will play during a recent interview for the DVD release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
According to him, Doctor Doom won’t be the character we have been seeing in the comics, films, or the cartoons; instead, he will be a programmer who does a lot of angry blogging on the side. Hit the jump for more.
Here is what Kebbell told Collider,
“I’m excited to see it too, and my nerves really”¦The only thing I can tease you about is what I worked on most was the voice because nobody””even in the cartoons, when I was watching them I was like, ‘So where’s he from?’ There’s a mild change and I’ll tell you because of our history. He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours””I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m ‘Doom’.”
While the name change isn’t as dramatic as it would seem, Kebbell’s description reveals that the film has a very different origins story for the character. Instead of the highly intelligent ruler of Latveria who hides his hideous scars with an equally hideous mask of metal, we are getting an angry blogger. Based on Kebbell’s comments, the Doctor Doom we will see is more like the character seen in the Ultimate comics, but not as highly intelligent. Both versions have the character experienced in various fields of science, but in the new film he will be just another computer programmer, who does a lot of angry blogging.
Maybe he’ll work over at the Baxter Building with Reed Richards, and he is simply expressing his frustrations that Reed is the lead programmer and he isn’t on his blog. It could also be that Kebbell is simply toying with us. But should that be true, it would make more sense that the film is as grounded as it is being described since this Doctor Doom is a humble programmer who isn’t next in line to rule to Latverian throne.
