11-Year-Old Boy Is The Voice Of God In Ridley Scott’s ‘Exodus’; Final Trailer Released
  |  @   |

For his upcoming biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, director Ridley Scott chose to cast an 11-year-old boy to portray the voice of God.

In the movie, Moses (Christian Bale) meets the young boy named Malak (played by Isaac Andrews) in front of the burning bush. The boy then appears from time to time to guide and debate Moses, who eventually realizes that this boy is actually being used by God to speak to him. Fun fact: the word “malak” translates to “messenger” in the Hebrew bible.

Continue reading to see why Scott decided to go this route when it came to the voice of God in Exodus: Gods and Kings, and to check out the final trailer for the movie.

Of the decision, Scott explained:

“Sacred texts give no specific depiction of God, so for centuries artists and filmmakers have had to choose their own visual depiction. Malak exudes innocence and purity, and those two qualities are extremely powerful.”

As a consultant on the film, Rabbi David Baron was asked about the decision, saying “They went off the biblical text, but the biblical text was very terse.” The rabbi also added that “anything that will result in people taking a second look at the text and engaging with the Bible” is worth it.

Exodus: Gods and Kings also stars Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley, and will be released on December 12th.
