Last week, the Internet exploded like a last TIE Fighter upon the release of the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In our analysis of this first footage, we asked (as did the entire universe) who was narrating the trailer. It sounded a lot like Benedict Cumberbatch, who is not part of the cast of the film, but it was more likely to be Andy Serkis, who is a confirmed castmember, although we still don’t know what The Hobbit actor’s role is within the Star Wars universe.
Today, the morning TV news program Good Morning America stated that they’ve confirmed that the narration in the trailer is actually Andy Serkis, although they did not reveal their sources (several websites have also confirmed with their own unnamed sources). Furthermore, the site Jedi News has some details on what Serkis will be doing in the new film.
Here’s the scoop from Jedi News via ComingSoon:
One of those roles is, as expected, motion capture based – and in that role he will be part of a “group of unbelievably athletic and acrobatic motion capture characters.” Also bringing those characters to life is parkour expect Pip Anderson, and “whom I [the source] believe to be Crystal Clarke.”
The second role for Serkis sees him take on a “pivotal role in the first act story arc that entwines with Daisy Ridley’s backstory,” and that role “may have more to it than it seems in the first instance.”
Serkis brought to life via motion-capture several memorable characters, like Gollum in Peter Jackson’s cinematic journey to Tolkien’s Middle-Earth in The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings films, as well as the main character Caeser in the newest Planet Of The Apes movies. So, it’s no surprise that the actor would be tapped for more mo-cap work.
So far, no official confirmation from StarWars.com or from anyone involved in the film’s productions (not even a tweet from director J.J. Abrams) as to who the voice is in the trailer or what role Serkis is playing.
UPDATE: Serkis spoke to Empire and confirmed that he is the voice heard in the trailer.
“I’m sure Benedict doesn’t need any more attention at the moment,” he laughs when told of the rampant Cumberchat. Oh, and he can’t say who (or what) he’s playing in the film because that would obviously not end well for him.
