Cary Fukunaga To Shoot ‘It’ Next Summer; Stephen King Gives His Blessing
  |  @   |

We’ve been hearing about a new adaptation of author Stephen King‘s horror meganovel It for a long time now, and it looks like the time for it to finally become a reality is fast approaching. A couple of years back we found out that Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga would be making a two-part adaptation of the book, something that became even more exciting when people got a better idea of what Fukunaga brings to the table after seeing his work directing all eight episodes of the first season of HBO’s True Detective.

Producer Dan Lin spoke about It recently, saying that the current plan is to start officially prepping the first movie in March for a summer 2015 shoot. He also said that they even have the blessing of King himself, which should help fans of the book to feel better about the adaptation.

Of the current plan, Lin told Vulture:

“Cary likes to develop things for a while, and we’ve been with this for about three or four years, so we’re super excited that he stayed with it. You guys are gonna be really excited.”

The book is set up perfectly to adapt into two movies; the first film will focus on the group of kids in Derry, Maine who are terrorized by It, and the second will see those kids reuniting as adults to fight their greatest fear.

As for King’s blessing, Lin said:

“The most important thing is that Stephen King gave us his blessing. We didn’t want to make this unless he felt it was the right way to go, and when we sent him the script, the response that Cary got back was, “˜Go with God, please! This is the version the studio should make.’ So that was really gratifying.”

At the moment, unfortunately, Fukunaga is only committed to direct the first of the two movies, though he is currently closing a deal to co-write the second movie. This feels like the kind of project you would want one director on, and maybe even the kind of project that should all be filmed at the same time to ensure maximum cohesiveness and such. But we shall see how it goes.
