The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Christmas Time is here!” Henchman 21 and “Happiness and Cheer!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of December 10, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Yeah, we missed out last week. I was busy with a post-Thanksgiving coma plus I was confused because TV was telling me that every day is Black Friday and I got confused. Anyway, we’re back with a bunch of books out this week which don’t even include the launch of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Bitch Planet, a new issue of Southern Bastards, or the start of Spider-Man and the X-Men. We’ve even got some leftovers from last week on the list, so let’s get right to The GoD List!

Henchman 21

Afterlife with Archie #7 Cover by Francesco Francavilla

Afterlife with Archie #7 (Archie Comics – $3.99) Finally a new issue Afterlife with Archie! It’s been a while since the last issue came out, and I hope you’ve all had time to catch up because Afterlife with Archie remains a series that shouldn’t work but my goodness does it ever work. Writer Roberto Aguirre Sacasa treats the Archie characters with a certain reverence while putting them through the paces of a zombie apocalypse, and it is this juxtaposition that makes the series so effective. Of course, you can’t forget the amazingly evocative art of Francesco Francavilla. Francavilla’s art is dark and stylish and is completely unlike the standard Archie style, but all the characters feel right and he is one of the best horror artists working today. I’m sure this issue will be worth all the waiting.

Secret Six #1 (DC Comics – $2.99) Hey, it’s another volume of Secret Six, written by Gail Simone. I know there are a whole batch of Simone fans that have been wanting this book since the launch of the New 52, and hopefully this lives up to their expectations. Art on the book is by Ken Lashley, who is a very solid superhero artist that should work well on this series. The story is similar to any other Secret Six that you may have read before; a group of villains are brought together, in this case they are trying to find out “What is the secret?” Catman is back, as well as Black Alice, but we’ll have to read the issue to find out who else is on the team. Secret Six has always been a solid book, and it’s great to see DC finally bring it back.

Eternal #1 (BOOM! Studios – $3.99) Eternal #1 is a cool little sci-fi series that you probably don’t know much about. The basic premise is that in the future, cloning has been perfected, rendering humanity essentially immortal. But what of the people who want to live their life as nature intended? The story feels a bit like an inverted version of Blade Runner and there are some intriguing questions brought up that I want to see explored further. Writer William Harms quickly establishes the world and artist Giovanni Valleta solidly expresses that world. If you’re looking for a solid science fiction story, give this one a shot.

East of West: The World (Image Comics – $3.99) I love Jonathan Hickman’s East of West. It is one of my favorite series out right now and what I love about it is the fully formed world that Hickman has built and filled with a rich cast of characters. East of West: The World is a one-shot that fills in information about the series, but it isn’t just filler that can be skipped. East of West: The World promises to have plot points that are just as vital to the main story as a regular issue. So, if you’re enjoying East of West, make sure you don’t miss out on this one.

Dave3

Bitch Planet #1 (Image Comics – $3.50) Kelly Sue DeConnick. Valentine De Landro. Violence. Science Fiction. Women-in-prison. Exploitation epic. Buy this book. ‘Nuff said!
