Sons of Anarchy Cast Poster

Previously on Sons of Anarchy…the end began as it began in the beginning with John Teller’s voice.

If you have not watched the series finale, do NOT read this. It’s chock full of spoilers!

As with all series finales, fans waited with bated breath, hoping for a satisfying ending. Endings never please everyone, but I think THIS final episode will not be as controversial as other series endings. It was as satisfying as could be.

So how did Sons of Anarchy 7.13 “Papa’s Goods” end?

Well. It ended well.

The series finale takes place in the space of one day. What would you do if you knew it was your last day on Earth? Jax (Charlie Hunnam) knew. After living a life where you could be taken out at any moment, there was peace in choosing your day…this day.

What was on Jax Teller’s ?

He takes care of business. Through all seven seasons, he negotiated deals and counter deals, to try to make sure his club and family were safe, and it never seemed to work out. Someone was always betrayed. The final answer was to be the only answer. Be the sole betrayer and killer and scapegoat. He became the solution as only he could be, and he could only be it once.

Today was almost methodical as he puts on his rings, takes out his journals, looks at Abel, holds and kisses Thomas, throws out bloody sneakers, packs up his journals, checks his gun, and takes the last look at the home he shared with Tara (Maggie Siff).

Jax is slowly saying goodbye to life.

-He goes to storage and looks at pics and the manuscript and burns it all.
-He gathers deeds and birth certificates
-He goes to Opie’s (Ryan Hurst) grave and Tara’s and leaves his rings.
-He says his goodbyes to those he loves and is leaving behind..Lyla, Nero (Jimmy Smits), his sons, Wendy (Drea de Mateo), the remainder of his club, and even Chuckie.

Jax saw his boys, his ex-wife Wendy (she got an I love you!), and “best friend” Nero, off to safety and a life away from Charming, and charged Nero with helping Wendy navigate the paperwork. He was doing what he should have done when his “wife was alive”. Jax told Nero, “When the time comes, she needs to tell my sons what I really am. I’m not a good man. I’m a criminal and a killer. I need my sons to grow up hating the thought of me.” This was the understandable motive behind the burning. JT romanticized himself while denouncing what the club had become in the manuscript. He wanted no journals for Abel or Thomas to read and feel connection to.

Change came to the club as they patched in T.O. Cross (Michael Beach), the first black member. Oh how Juice would have loved a peek into this future!

He took care of his club too. He made them vote for him to meet Mayhem, and he passed the presidency to Chibs (Tommy Flanagan), who made the “good choice” to name Tig the VP. And then he murdered his loose ends: Barosky (Peter Weller), Marks (Billy Brown), and the Irish bigwigs with the exception of Connor (deja vu) and Hugh. The boys got one last car/motorcycle chase, complete with wipeout. The chase through the factory caused doll body parts to fly all over, and that was not obviously metaphoric at all. So good!

Sutter did leave a few surprises. Most of us thought Jax had to die, and we all sat here thinking Chibs was going to do it. When he shot Happy in the hand instead and drove away on his father’s bike, I thought they were going to let him ride off into the sunset, to validate his “I don’t know” to Nero’s query. He merely said, “I got this,” as homage to Opie and was gone.

The last loose end was to make a recorded statement on who killed Tara and Eli to DA Patterson. He gave her the address where Gemma and Unser were.

We finally understood the homeless woman whose reappearance usually preceded a big death, but never in an obvious way. This time, she was more active. Jax smiles at her and says, “Who are you?” She hands him his literal cover and says, “It’s time.” She is the Reaper, coming to take Jax home.

The end came full circle. Jax went to the stretch of highway where JT rode into a truck perhaps on purpose, sacrificing himself so his club and family could survive. Jax led police down the same stretch, let go of the handles smiling, and closed his eyes. We are spared seeing the impact, just two crows flying out of the way from a running pool of blood.

He died as his father did before him.

The last thing on our screens was:

Doubt thou the stars are fire;
Doubt that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar
but never doubt I love.
-William Shakespeare

A fitting quote and a fitting end for a man whose every move was motivated by love.

Sons of Anarchy, you will be missed.
