the amazing spider-man 2 andrew garfield

As expected, we are learning more about Sony’s plans to share Spider-Man with Marvel since news of the studio’s e-mail hacking scandal broke in late November. With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperforming at the box office, and Sinister Six and Venom spinoff films showing no signs of development, the once lucrative franchise was beginning to look more like a lost cause. So would make sense for Sony to share the character with Marvel. It’s definitely a move that would benefit both studios. But as we all know, there was a fallout, and any plans to share the webslinger never came to be.

However, had those talks ended successfully, we would have seen Spider-Man make his big Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War. But we wouldn’t see the current Spider-Man, played by Andrew Garfield, in the sequel. According to reports, this would be a different actor playing Spider-Man, who is already an established character in the MCU. Hit the jump for more.

This isn’t quite exactly the idea of sharing Sony had in mind, which is why there was such a fallout. According to Latino Review, the plan was for Marvel to distance themselves from Sony’s Spider-Man by introducing their version of the character as already established, which is why he would be introduced in Civil War.

If Marvel were to have reacquired Spider-Man, the plan was to focus on the character’s troubles of balancing his life as Peter Parker with his life as Spider-Man, as opposed to the already established origins stories. The studio felt that the character needed a change since the last five movies centered on the romance aspect.

It would definitely be a refreshing step in the right direction, and had they signed off on the idea, Andrew Garfield would have not been in the picture. According to the report, Marvel wanted Garfield out, and Spider-Man recast. While Sam Raimi had a different vision when Tobey Maguire was playing the webslinger, in Marc Webb’s films, Garfield was somewhat closer to the comic book character in terms of tone and personality. The problem is that Raimi’s films had a better grasp of the story than Webb’s films did. However, Sony Pictures’ Amy Pascal wanted to keep Garfield in the role, which is probably why talks between the two studios were unsuccessful.
